Brahma / Creative energy: A creative energy that brings something new and fresh into the world. Brings new gadgets into society, builds things. It can be a fairly inventive nakshatra as it often creates things to solve specific problems.

Sage Pulaha: Married Daksha’s daughter Kshama and had three sons; Kardama, Kanakapeetha, Urvarivat; and a daughter Peevari. He had three more sons with his granddaughter, Gati: Karmasreshtta, Vareeyamsu, Sahishnu. Helped create the wildlife as well as many of the mythical beasts, including butterflies, lion, wolves and lambs. Since his children were so poorly behaved, he adopted Agastya’s son, Drdhasyu. He practiced intense devotion to Lord Shiva on the banks of the Alaknanda river (the source of the Ganges). He was involved with talking Sage Parashara out of killing all the Rakshasas. When King Bharata renounced his kingdom he went to Sage Pulaha’s ashram for refuge. He had knowledge of theatre and drama.

It’s said that one of his sons, Kardama, was granted two boons by Lord Vishnu: The first was that he got a good wife, and he soon married Devahuti. The second was to have a son who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and Kapila was soon born. His nine daughters all married great sages: Anasuya (wife of sage Atri), Arundhati (wife of sage Vasistha) & Khyati (wife of sage Bhrigu), Gati (2nd wife of sage Pulaha, according to Bhagavata Purana). After their householder duties were complete, Devahuti went to study with her son, Sage Kapila, from whom she learned Sankhya philosophy. Kapila is identified with Agni and is known to have reduced sixty thousand sons of king Sagara to ash with a glance. Kapila is usually shown with jatamukha (jata crown), a beard, and four arms (two in yoga holding a pitcher, one holding a shakha and another with a chakra. According to Siva Purana, a Sage named Kardama was born from Brahma’s shadow to be an aspirant, but this may be a different Karadama. The word, ‘kardama’ means: mud, muck, dirty, and is sometimes used to refer to sin. Adi Parva describes him as a virtuous serpent and the grandson of Viraja. It’s said that kardama was so pleased with his wife that he gave her an airplane with which they travelled the world.

His adopted son, Drdhasyu, was a master of scripture from birth as he memorised them from his mothers womb. He learned stick combat and martial arts from Lord Murgan, and he was also known as Idhmavaha for his ability to carry huge loads of wood from the forest. ‘Idhma’ refers to tinder that is ready to be burned (the perfect student).

Deva: The planets relating with the Devas will promote more refined and righteous behaviour; but may struggle with pride and entitlement. They are more capable of understanding the subtitles of life. This is also used in chart matching. They say it’s best if both parties belong to the same tribe (8 points). However, they say that a deva and a rakshasa will get one point for the attraction of opposites). This is a very important classification suggesting that the way these three tribes (devas, humans & rakshasa) live is so different as to have a major effect on marriage compatibility and living together.

Vaishya: Merchant caste appreciates trade, negotiation, connection and networking.

Moksha: The goal here is to accept and let go, to release, liberate oneself and others. Expenditure, loss, release are the themes. One usually seeks to go beneath the surface. Expect planets in moksha nakshatra’s to support all kinds of loss, liberation and freedom.

Laghu / Kshipra – Swift / Light: Supports any kind of quick, light activity like short travel, quick easy interactions with people, sports, games, arts & crafts, educational pursuits, decorating, dressing up, dating, hanging out with friends. It’s a good day to appreciate the simple things in life, treat yourself to a little tender-love n care, a spa treatment, yoga, as well as most holistic remedies. It’s also good for most of the “moveable” activities, like travel, and making changes as long and they’re pretty quick and easy. Making money move in various ways, especially light, swift transactions: buying, selling, borrowing, conducting trade, or the personal side of business getting to know clients, having a business lunch. This is similar energy we see on Thursday. Ashwini, Pushya, Hasta, Abhijit are all swift & light.

Rajasic: function through the mind, emotions, intellect in a spiritually active way.

Fire: rises up, expands, illuminates, transformers burns, cooks, assimilates

  • Fire + Air = cooperation / Earth + Water = Cooperation / Space cooperates with all.
  • Earth does not cooperate with Fire and impedes Air
  • Water does not cooperate with Air and impedes Fire

Vata:  Air + Ether = Cold, dry, light, moving, subtle, clear, hard, pervasive, rough

  • Flighty, spiritual, thin
  • Disturbed by bitter (Mars), astringent (Saturn), pungent (Sun).
  • Pacified by sweet (Jupiter) & sour (Venus)

Passive: Planets here will be more passive about achieving its goals: allowing things to happen rather than “forcing” things. The moon is said to persuade through temptation so she does well here. Venus draws us in by her promises of beauty so she also does well. Saturn is the master of patience so he also does well. The active planets can cause a bit of trouble in trying to force things that we should just allow to happen naturally.

Male: imparts male characteristics to planets placed here. Live karakas may also be male.

Triyanga Mukha – Facing Straight Ahead (Level): This is a level-headed and forward looking position. It’s good for mundane, everyday tasks that allows us to prepare for the future. This nakshatra promotes an honest, realistic assessment. It marks a good time to level with others or yourself, to ensure that the playfield and the ground are all level. It can be a good time to start surveying, building, laying pipe, or sticking a level on anything. Mercury and Venus share this perspective. Ashwini, Mrigasira, Punarvasu, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Jyeshta and Revati are all forward looking.

South: Auspiciousness and results will most likely be found in the southern direction.

Female Buffalo: (pairs with Swati)

Sex and creation can feel like a duty. Buffalo’s are symbols of tamasic energy suggesting a slow, lazy, stubborn and dark approach to the creative process. Sex may be dirty but unimaginative. Mahishashura was a shapeshifting buffalo demon killed by Durga. They will have to face arrogance, false pride, and procrastination which can all have a negative effect on the creative process. They can also be overindulgent, and experience addictive tendencies and much self criticism and loss of trust.

Spondias Indica Tree / “Pittavriksha bile tree” / Spanish Plumb

A member of the cashew family. The leaves and fruit are commonly used as a source of food and medicine. The fruit is commonly used in pickles in India, but it can also be eaten fresh.

The unripened sour fruit is astringent and aphrodisiac. The sweet, ripe fruit is cooling and soothing.  It’s high in fibre, iron, vitamins A, B and C, calcium and phosphorus which strengthens the immune system and tonifies the body. It’s high enough in iron to make an effective treatment for anaemia and the mineral salts such as potassium and calcium help the body to reabsorb water and nutrients while antioxidants help keep us young. A decoction from the bark is very effective for dysentry, gastro-intestinal disorders, and infantile tympanites.

Auspicious Activities

This is a light swift nakshatra suggesting it’s a favourable day to enjoy, work with your hands: play music, do crafts, tinker around the house, teach or play with children, do a bit of gardening or yard care, chat with the neighbours, practice a bit of yoga & meditation. It’s an excellent day for a sunrise bath in a holy river. Offer your service to take care of some little things for friends and family. Get involved with the community; keep the daylight, multi-task.

Do not make long term plans or laze around; this is not a day for procrastination. But do try to avoid doing anything at night; just relax and let the day flow. Do not sign contracts when the moon is in Hasta, especially during the dark half of the month, as it may be a good day for thieves and tricksters.

Gods & Symbols of Hasta

Savitur:

Before the sun rises he is called Savitur. He is known as the destroyer of ignorance, bringer of light to darkness by working through our intelligence. He inspires and impels acts of worship. He is the god of stimulation, “the impeller”. The rules over all mobile and immobile objects. He has golden hair and golden arms (like Agni & Indra), rides a golden chariot, with a gold axel which is omni-form. He is said to have a beautiful tongue but may also be “iron-jawed.” He wears tawny clothes. His chariot is pulled by two radiant, bronze, white-footed horses. His golden splendour stretched itself out or is diffused across the heavens, the sky and the earth. Like Vishnu he is in charge of maintaining the natural order of the universe.

Savitur is invoked through the Gayatri mantra during the thread ceremony, which marks the beginning of Vedic studies for Brahmin youth. It’s a very popular ritual to recite this mantra 108 times during the hour of Brahma just before the sun rises. Some of his hymns are ment for evening worship. Even in a general sense Savitur is considered to be the one who inspires or impels ritual sacrifice and spiritual or religious thought.

The Gayatri Mantra was a gift from Maharshi Vishvamitra.

भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्

oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ; tat savitur vareṇyaṃ;

bhargo devasya dhīmahi; dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt

“We choose the Supreme Light of the divine Sun; we aspire that it may impel our minds.”Sri Aurobindo further elaborates: “The Sun is the symbol of divine Light that is coming down and Gayatri gives expression to the aspiration asking that divine Light to come down and give impulsion to all the activities of the mind.”

~Sri Aurobindo

Savitur did not take part in the Soma right, which is perhaps why many Hasta natives do not drink; or at least seem to be moderate drinkers. But Savitur is often associated with other deities. He’s almost inseparable from Surya though occasional passages seem to make a distinction between them. “Savitur rises in brilliance making light for the whole world; Surya, shining brightly, has filled heaven and earth with air and his rays.” In other parts it seems that savitur mixes with the rays of the Surya.

Aside from Surya, Savitur is closely identified with Soma, Agni, Indra, Pushan, Mitra & Bhaga. Some say Savitur rules the west while Agni rules the east. Savitur and Agni are the only two gods referred to as “domestics” (damunas). It might be interesting to note that he is often mentioned as one of the asura’s. He is the sun that we don’t see (we only see the rays shining over the horizon. As half the world is perpetually dark to us. Savitur is that light we know is shining in the dark. Savitur is our intelligence that allows us to reach beyond the horizon of observable reality. Savitur is the vivifier working with Pushan to purify our thoughts for worship. He embodies the laws of Mitra and the wealth of Bhaga. He is sometimes called “Child of the Waters” (apam napat). It’s important to note that Savitur is a vedic god whose name does not appear in the later Puranic literature.

The first line of Gayatri, “bhur, bhuva svah,” may refer to the 11 gods of heaven, 11 gods of the atmosphere, and the 11 gods of earth. Some things we can see, some things we can feel, other things we either know or we don’t; they cannot be explained.

Sri Aurobindo goes on to explain the place of Savitur in our world. “Once the senses are controlled and the mind is stabilised through slaying of all the dark powers, comes the awakening, the goddess Ushas, who brings along with her Ashwins into the world of inner consciousness. After Ushas appears Aditi, the Primal Sun, the God of Light: First as Savitr, who represents the divine grace essential for all spiritual success, and then as Mitra, who as the divine love is considered as a friend of the illumined mind (Indra) and his associates (the other gods). The Sun is Truth, after which appear Rta (Truth in Action) and Rtachit (Truth Consciousness).”

When we look into ourselves and ask after the source of our activity or inactivity, we can talk all we want about choice and free will, reason and rationality, but every idea, every thought, every inspiration has as its source a ray of light, an illumination and some force that impels us to follow the path of the mind or the body that is lit up before us.

Vulture/Jatayu:

Vultures are the great scavengers of the world. They feed on the dead and have been called the janitors of the animal kingdom. The Zostarians (or is the the Jains?) put the dead bodies of their loved ones on a platform so that they may be eaten by the Vultures. It’s not hard to understand how this might actually be one of the most efficient and sustainable ways of disposing of dead human bodies. This is of course what happens to most animals that die a natural death: the scavengers and the insects take care of the bulk of the body before it starts to decompose and turn back into the earth.

Vultures fly very high like an eagle as the survey huge areas of land for fallen corpses.  clean up the rotting disease infested skilled, fly very high, angles, mimicry

(See the stories of crow below)

Horus: Rays of light

Palm: This seems to relate both to the palm of the hand as well as the palm tree.

Palm Sunday happens one week before Easter Sunday and marks the beginning of a holy week; some call it “Passion Sunday.” This is the day Jesus entered Jerusalem to a great “fan fair” as the locals waved palm leaves and covered his path with them. He knew that he was walking into his death, but he entered the city anyways. Before entering he sent two disciples to fetch him a colt which had not been broken. He rode in on this fresh donkey as the people shouted, “Hosanna, save now.” They recognized him as their king; their saviour. The palm leaves are considered a symbol of goodness and victory, of eternal life and victory over death. The Egyptians carried them in funeral processions. Arriving on a donkey was meant to show that he came in peace, with humility; and in turn they laid their cloaks down before him and an act of submission and surrender.

O Christ our God

When Thou didst raise Lazarus from the dead before Thy Passion,

Thou didst confirm the resurrection of the universe.

Wherefore, we like children,

carry the banner of triumph and victory,

and we cry to Thee, O Conqueror of love,

Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is He that cometh

in the Name of the Lord.

Hand:

Often a symbol of power, strength and protection. We use our hands to help and to ask for help, to reach out to the world and to grasp at it’s illusions. The hands are, however, most commonly associated with trying to make the right choice.

We have two hands, right and left, signifying the inherent dualities of the natural world: light & dark, good & evil, male & female, life & death, yin & yang. The hands relate with our ability to choose one side or the other. Savitur is invoked to help us make the right choice.

Potters Wheel / Impeller:

Represents centrifugal force and brings to mind the action of an impeller in pumping systems. The impeller is the opposite of a turbine which draws energy out of moving water; the impeller adds force to make the water move and increase the flow and pressure of the water. The propeller that drives ships forward through the water can also be considered impellers. The agitator of a washing machine is also a kind of impeller. Fire fighters of most commonwealth countries use an impeller as a symbol.

Colour Green:

Picasso had a “green period” whenever a Venus dasha period would come along.

Star of Hasta

“The lonely one offers his hand too quickly to whomever he encounters.”

― Friedrich Nietzsche

Corvus (d Corvi): The crow (or Raven).

Made up of five stars (or fingers)

The sacred bird of Apollo which was tasked with watching over his pregnant lover while he was away. She gets bored and finds a new lover, but when the crow reports this to Apollo he is punished by being scorched black (crows were white before this). Apollo had his loved one killed, but the child was removed from her body first. This child grew up to be the great healer (seen in the constellation Ophiuchus; the serpent bearer).

  • Infidelity, treason, curses, conception of a son, wounded healer (relates also to Chiron)

Alternate story about Apollo and the crow: Apollo sends the crow to fetch water, along the way he sees some figs that are almost ripe so he waits a few days, enjoys his feat and then continues his task. When he returns with the water he lies about his delay, blaming it on a water snake which blocked his path. He cursed the crow that he would not be able to drink at the time when figs become ripe. “. . .in August in Mississippi there’s a few days somewhere about the middle of the month when suddenly there’s a foretaste of fall, it’s cool, there’s an ambience, a soft, a luminous quality to the light, as though it came not from just today but from back in the old classic times. It might have fauns and satyrs and the gods and—from Greece, from Olympus in it somewhere. It lasts just for a day or two, then it’s gone. . .the title reminded me of that time, of a luminosity older than our Christian civilisation.” William Faulkner

They express them selves through careful attention to detail and make very good artists, writers, musicians, or even athletes. These are the ones who always have to struggle to find truth through their work, through adversity, through logic and critical thinking.

Moon in Hasta

“I’m not a man who constantly thinks up jokes. But I think it’s very important to be able to see the funny side of life and its joyful dimension and not to take everything too tragically. I’d also say it’s necessary for my ministry. A writer once said that angels can fly because they don’t take themselves too seriously. Maybe we could also fly a bit if we didn’t think we were so important.”

— Pope Benedict XVI

The classics say that one born in with Moon in Hasta will be sensually disposed, enthusiastic, clever, good in speaking, but disposed to thievery. He will be rich and be intent on living in foreign places. He will show enthusiasm in war, at which he will be an expert and will destroy enemies. The native will be industrious, devoted to love & virtue, valorous but addicted to females, and will serve others. He will befriend the learned and live in opulence. They have active habits and many resources they can draw upon. They are energetic, daring, shameless, merciless, a drunkard and thief. (The Classics: Varahamihira, Brihat Samhita, Sage Narada, Hora Sara, Jataka Parijata.)

The dual nature promised by Virgo is found in Hasta through the relationship between Sun (ruling deity) & Moon (ruling planet). On one hand they are strong, daring, protective or guardian figures; while on the other hand they are lighthearted, practical-joking parental figures. They are usually community minded and like being with family and friends. They might seek out roles that allow them to serve and protect, healing, healthcare, and wellness. They are servants and fixers. They can be a little suspicious and untrusting, possibly because they are themselves known for their trickery which can lead to theft. They usually have good dexterity and coordination of mind; of body; between the hand and the eye. It can be a good place for Hatha Yoga, gymnastics, wrestling; mental gymnastics, wrestling with problems.

If the Moon is afflicted and poorly placed these Hasta folks can be cruel, lying, cheating, thieving, employing trickery to make a living; addicted to wine and women; always chasing after the opposite sex and often taking advantage or their relatively innocent looks. They can be emotional and easily triggered bringing, which causes them to become insolent and heartless. They are usually comforted by a little handi-work, fixing or crafting things, offering protection and shelter to the less fortunate.

“We can fall, but in the end we fall into God’s hands, and God’s hands are good hands.” — Pope Benedict XVI

“If we take the Lord’s hand and let ourselves be guided by him, the path we take will be right and good.”— Pope Benedict XVI

Tall and stout, calm nature, smiling, The Moon here makes them a comforting parental figure who gives no real reason anyone can leave them. He gets respect and honour from society and will sacrifice his life for others. He is always ready to help others. Despite all this they get a lot of criticism and opposition. They can be plebeians who don’t like posh living even if they do have money. The Moon rulership of Hasta also brings many ups and downs in life, Hasta placements can be very sensitive to what is going on in the world. For all their sincerity and hard work, they often end up with medium success. They do, however, tend to work at fairly high level careers in business or industry; tradesmen or craftsmen; social services or health care; military or war. They can be vengeful; but can learn to leave the revenge to god and withdraw from conflict. They are quick to intervene in disputes and give good advice. They typically have really good all around knowledge and will take on many responsibilities.

Females with this can be argumentative and outspoken (usually a more difficult trait in women). Curbing this tendency will be to her benefit as she often does not think of the consequences of what she is saying. Express themselves shyly (like a virgin/Virgo). Often unemployed due to support from family or husband, they make good housewives and find comfort in habitual movements of house chores and taking care of the family. They tend towards plumpness and a soft body. If they are born into a very poor family she may go into agriculture or the construction trades.

Bepin Behari Moon in Virgo: “makes the psyche susceptible to influences of earthly life and involved in pleasures derived from sensual gratifications. It will be almost shut against admonitions coming from the higher plane.”

Mars is very strong in the 1st pada but debilitated in the 4th pada. Whatever they are doing usually takes a lot of fine motor coordination; more of an aggressive touch then a gentle one though. especially in the 4th pada where he is debilitated in the navamsha which is likely to result in the lashing out at others in order to feel secure in themselves. The 1st pada is also warlike, but more aggressive in conquering, penetrating and taking initiative. They might weaponise one’s own good nature as well as using humour, sarcasm, and crude jokes to gain an upper hand.

Venus in Hasta

“What is a cynic? A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.”

— Oscar Wilde

“Work is the curse of the drinking class.”

—Oscar Wilde

“War is progress. Peace is stagnation.”

—Hegel

Venus is debilitated here but gets a considerable boost when in conjunction with Mercury or Mercury is in Libra. Complicates relationships by reducing trust, making people fight for love, and seeing the beauty in exploitation. They love to be of service, the women, sisters and wives love to be of service and there can be considerable imbalance in social relationships with women. Women are most likely to experience this as exploitation and female health problems. Both sexes tend to objectify love, sex and beauty. Men are especially attracted to their servers, servants, service personnel and often get in relationships with women who work for them or are of a lesser caste, young, and virginal. They might become distant from their wives after the birth of children. Women with this position have a hard time to recognise their inner beauty and are prone to objectifying themselves. There is this idea that they cannot negotiate on a fair battle field, a woman may not feel pretty enough, so she wears a shorter skirt. A man may feel that he cannot get a woman on his level so looks for women who are easy or can be purchased. This is often depicted as a position that gives some objectification of women, but it’s actually an objectification of love and beauty as images to be projected rather than truths in themselves.

There are almost always imbalances in the relationship, but there are many opportunities where this debilitation can be reversed by Mercury. They could work in financial services, deal with luxury health care or wellness resorts. They might have a love for logic, debate, argumentation, war. They often have a mismatch in their style somehow, they have an appreciation for the imbalances of life. Women in their life may be exploited for their service and labour. Relationships may be practical and convenient. They often fall in love with “the under dog.” This love for the underdog goes out into the whole world as their senses look out through a watery emotionalised filter of Hasta. Just listen to a few Kenny Rogers love songs and you’ll know what I mean. But very often this love does not fix anything, it just masks the suffering. Depending on the houses involved, they may have to fight for ownership of those things. They can also gain from their exploited status receiving free gifts from family or government and they might sometimes seek to exploit their own exploited status as they recognise the value of it.

“The system of logic is the realm of shadows, the world of simple essentialities, freed of all sensuous concretion. To study this science, to dwell and to labor in this realm of shadows, is the absolute culture and discipline of consciousness.”

—Hegel

Loves to work hard, long hours with their hands, long hands, pain in their hands, stiff hands, very critical with their hands, long tasks by hand, healing with hands, mechanical work, plumbing, farming. Give gloves to your servants (help your servants), they must do the right thing. Tamasic energy: will always persevere with hard work. Mechanical technical fields, hands on labour. Moon rules Hasta; gets too attached to their work, to what they build, cannot let go of their work or with what they have done. They hoard a little bit; they don’t want to share the work. In the 6th house it can make a hand doctor. Using the hands to kill or beat people. Use their hands to serve criminals: steal, rob, kill.
