Qualities of Purva Phalguni

Vishnu – Sustaining, Maintaining, Organising principle: Focus is to maintain order in the universe, in society and life. Their focus is to maintain what is here and keep things going. It primarily does this through organization of the available resources. Purva Phalguni often does this through some kind of trust that may be self-sustaining and thus never ending. On the other hand they can be criticised for coasting after some initial success.   

Sage Atri: He was a Brahma Rishi who wrote many of the hymns and mantras in the Vedas. He was famed for his power of detachment. Author of Atri Samhita & Atri Smriti. His wife, Anusuya was known as the embodiment of chastity. To test her purity the trinity, Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva, all show up at her home as sadhus and demand that she make herself naked before serving them. Out of a sense of hospitality and charity she immediately agreed to this. She then had the three gods turned into infants before getting naked and nursing them one after the other. The great gods were so overwhelmed by this that they took her for their own mother and blessed her family by having themself be born again from her womb. Brahmas was born as Soma, Vishnu as Dattatreya, and Shiva as Durvasa. In his second life Sage Atri had two more children: Aryaman (nobility) and Amala (purity). Budh (the planet Mercury) was one of his notable grandsons.

Dattatreya

Dattatreya is notable today for his connection to tantra and devotional practice through the Natha lineage of India. For Natha’s Dattatreya is an incarnation of Shiva and their first guru. He is known as the “Lord of Yoga.” He has numerous temples along the North bank of the Narmada river where pilgrims can get food, shelter and rest. He is often depicted with a dog to show his loyalty and caring nature towards even the lowest dogs of this world. This kind of caring and charity is common with this placement. They often seek to care for or uplift the down trodden. 

Sage Durvasa

Durvasa seemed to gain spiritual power whenever he cursed someone, which he did often, but it didn’t always work out good for him. He once cursed a righteous king with a frightful demon that sprouted from a single strand of hair. The power of the king’s moral standing easily defended him by raising a more powerful beast who chased Durvasa around until he finally went back to the king to ask pardon. Another time he cursed a young maiden to be forgotten by her lover and she was. All this suggests that Purva Phalguni people can overestimate their power. And by raising others up indiscriminately they might discover that they’ve created the very beast which is their downfall. We see this especially with Saturn in this Nakshatra connecting with the black strand of hair. 

Drona, the mad leader of the Kaurava family was a disciple of Atri. Right around the time Yudhishthra announced the death of Drona’s son, Atri came to counsel him to give up the bloody war and stop the destruction that had come from his actions which went against dharma. Drona heeds this advice and goes into a completely detached meditation in the middle of the battlefield until he is killed. Atri also crossed paths with the Pandavas during their exile. By Krishna’s blessing Drupati was able to satisfy his hunger with a single grain of rice to avoid the wrath of his curse. Like Drona, many Purva Phalguni people will do the right thing once they realize their mistake. There almost seems to be an indiscriminate sense of multiplication as good karma multiplied the rice grains and bad karma multiplied into a civil war and eventual surrender for the primary antagonist. 

Human/Manushya: Human nakshatras are more likely to live a human life style and it’s advised that they marry others who are of the clan of humans. They are neither gods nor demons, but lie somewhere in between seeking a higher form of existence but often falling short of even their own ideals. 

Brahmin: Priestly educated caste. Planets here will seek to follow dharma, philosophy, and a humanistic path. They may seek to spread and espouse their ideas, wisdom, beliefs or ideology. 

Kama: Motivation comes through desire and is often influenced by social situations and the opinion of others. They seek connection, profit, and free choice. 

Krura/Ugra – Fierce/Severe:  A provocative placement for starting fights, arguments, litigation, quitting your job, bringing an end to things or taking care of things once and for all. Serving justice or carrying out a crime, killing things, cheating, poisoning, surgery, buying or using guns and other weapons, destroying your enemies or obstacles in a harsh way. It’s good for harvesting, tearing down the old, clearing land for development, activities that once done cannot be undone. It can be great for cutting off toxic relationships, giving up bad habits, starting a tough detox, or going into rehab, completing some act of penance like self-flagellation. Magha, P. Phalguni, P. Ashadha, P. Bhadra are the other fierce Nakshatras. Tuesdays carry this energy which is why they say not to initiate travel on this day.  

Balanced: Here we find the balanced approach. Allows free will and fate to meet in the middle. But sometimes even balance can come at the cost of rigidity. 

Rajasic: Rajas functions through the mind, emotions, intellect in a spiritually active way. They are usually results orientated and active to achieve something. They have some heat or passion inside of themselves that needs to be satisfied.

Urdhva Mukha – Facing Upward: All these things that cause us to look upwards: mountains, church spires, temples, trees, birds, high places, and tall buildings. The intention might also be in building upwards or climbing the corporate ladder; though Purva Phalguni is usually more concerned with the social ladder. They tend towards optimism and hope and are often involved with uplifting others and like to have others look up to them. This can be a good day for sharing, offering trust or doing things that will raise you up in the esteem of others. Female Rat: (pairs with the male rat of Magha): “copulation cycle can be divided into three parts, the precopulatory phase, copulatory phase and executive phase [6]. During the precopulatory phase, the male rat and the receptive female (i.e. being in hormonal or behavioral estrus) will engage in anogenital sniffing. The subsequent copulatory phase consists of the female drawing the male’s attention with paracopulatory behavior: hopping (short jumps with all four legs off of the ground) and darting (short and sudden runaway movements, in which she presents her body to the male). In a reaction to these movements, the male rat will try to mount the female: he straddles the female from behind, and thrusts his hips in an attempt to locate the vagina with his penis. In the event of penile insertion into the vagina, the male rat continues his thrusting with a sudden deeper thrust. He then dismounts the female, visible as a short jump backwards, away from the female, sometimes raising his forepaws in the process. This behavior is recognized as an intromission. The physical stimulation caused by mounts and intromissions can cause the female to arch her back for easier vaginal entry, a receptive phenomenon known as lordosis. These behaviors tend to proceed in rapid succession, only to be interrupted by self-grooming, rest, and pacing by the female (runaway behavior). Finally, ejaculation constitutes the executive phase for the male, which is followed by a period of male inactivity, usually lasting around 5 min. The beginning of a new cycle of sexual behavior marks the end of the postejaculatory interval.

This becomes a day to look out for number one. Getting rid of toxic relationships can go well as can quitting bad habits which may feel like losing a part of yourself. One may conquer others by consent or agreement; but they have none-the-less been conquered. It can be a good day to take vows, engage in a cleanse or a detox, take time away for meditation or spiritual reflection.

Gods & Symbols of Purva Phalguni

 

Bhaga: God of wealth, prosperity, marriage and the morning. He protects and maintains conjugal bliss. He knows the proper procedure to froster affection and sexual passion between the sexes. He provides the enjoyment and union we seek thru sex that also works to build a family and procreate. Bhaga bestows family inheritance & wealthy patrons. He distributes wealth, honour, glory and prosperity to others, making sure everyone gets a share. This can be like someone winning an award and giving a thank you speech allowing the light to reflect upon others and lift them up. They will always get the biggest portion, they are the big stars up on stage with everyone looking up at them; it’s Purva Phalguni’s job to use their attention to lift others and bring awareness to other causes. Legend has it that Shiva/Rudra blinded Bhaga.

Bhaga is the son of Aditi so is one of the twelve Adityas:

    • “Now please hear me as I describe the descendants of Aditi in chronological order. In this dynasty the Supreme Personality of Godhead Nārāyaṇa descended by His plenary expansion. The names of the sons of Aditi are as follows: Vivasvān, Aryamā, Pūṣā, Tvaṣṭā, Savitā, Bhaga, Dhātā, Vidhātā, Varuṇa, Mitra, Śatru and Urukrama.” –Srimad Bhagavata Purana, Canto 6, Chapter 6, Verse 39,

Siddhi is the wife of Bhaga and he has three sons and one daughter.

    • “O King, Siddhi, who was the wife of Bhaga, the sixth son of Aditi, bore three sons, named Mahimā, Vibhu and Prabhu, and one extremely beautiful daughter, whose name was Āśī.” –Srimad Bhagavata Purana, Canto 6, Chapter 18, Verse 2
    • “Sister of Varuṇa, sister of Bhaga, first among all sing forth, O joyous Morning. Weak be the strength of him who worketh evil: may we subdue him with our car the guerdon.” –Rig Veda

During Daksha’s sacrifice, Bhaga’s eyes were pulled out by Virabhadra, the demon raised by Shiva’s rage.

    • “Vīrabhadra immediately caught Bhaga, who had been moving his eyebrows during Bhṛgu’s cursing of Lord Śiva, and out of great anger thrust him to the ground and forcibly put out his eyes.”Srimad Bhagavata Purana, Canto 4, Chapter 5, Verse 20.

Another version of the story has him blinded for taking the share or the portion allotted to the gods.

    • “They said, ‘Take it round to Bhaga (Savitṛ, the Patron), who sits on the south side of the sacrificial fire. Bhaga will eat it by way of fore-portion, so that it may be as though it were offered.’ They accordingly took it round to Bhaga, who sat on the south side. Bhaga (Savitṛ) looked at it: it burnt out his eyes. And thus it came to pass. Hence they say, ‘Bhaga is blind.’”

Hammock (day bed): rest, relaxation, comfort, carefree enjoyment, pleasure, creativity, procreative. This is where the bride and groom meet for the first time and prepare for the wedding ceremony that will bring them together. This is also where business partners meet. It’s a relaxing atmosphere where everyone throws around ideas and occasionally puts them together for something new, allowing them to create something much bigger than what could have been achieved otherwise. This could be creative people and organizers coming together. People with ideas and people with money can do good business under Purva Phalguni. The hard Business takes place under Uttara Phalguni, but in Purva Palguni we find some negotiations, some dreaming big, some dreams coming true. In modern times we might be advised to find a nice spot in the park and watch the clouds.  

The platform that holds the sacred fire pit: This is a raised platform, or sometimes it just has something marking out the territory. It’s the place where everyone’s attention goes to, it’s where the spotlight shines. Purva Phalguni brings our attention to all the people involved with allowing a star to shine, or a new idea to take birth. If it wasn’t for the production crew and all those people who look up to them and supported them along the way; there would be no star; there would be no fire in the sacred fire pit. The next nakshatra, Uttara Phalguni, represents the fire in the middle.

Shiva Lingam: One of the Rishis went to Kailash to speak with Shiva. But when he arrived he was asked to wait because Shiva was making love to Parvati. He waited and waited, eons went by and Shiva’s attendants kept asking him to wait just a little longer. Finally the Sage got tired of waiting and burst in on shiva and cursed him to always be remembered as a lingam. 

The Shiva lingam is one of the most ancient fertility symbols representing the union of man and woman and procreation. The round peg has entered the round hole and as a result we have creation. But shiva is all about destruction, and here it’s division that must be destroyed so that unity may prevail

Hymen (Hymenaeus): This was the goddess of sexual intercourse. Her name means: “to sew together,” or “the joiner.” This Hyman covering of the vaginal opening was traditionally supposed to be broken by sexual intercourse following a woman’s (first) marriage. She was closely related to Dionysus who provides the libations to overcome inhibitions and makes sure everyone has a good time. He even helps to numb the pain or discomfort sometimes associated with first intercourse.  

Moneta: Greek goddess of money and the mint. Minting money is like creating value usually based on the value of something else. There an equivalence struck. Juno Moneta was the temple where coins were minted, of course it relates with monetization of money. It’s also related to the Greek word  “moneres”, meaning “alone” or “unique”. The words “nova moneta” were often stamped onto coins and had the meaning of new money  

Stars of Purva Phalguni 

Zosma: (d Leonis) the girdle. the lion’s back, the wise. The fallen angel. It’s said to bring shame and public lynchings followed by some kind of benefit. Hercules jumped on the back of the Nemian lion before breaking its neck. Zosma influences people to go into a dangerous situation to become the victim, or the martyr. Usually have strong (or misplaced faith). Planets that are afflicted here are said to make people self-centered, spiteful, immoral, deviant, rude and full of hatred for oneself and others. Can give a melancholic nature, depressive states of mind, fear of death, and fear of poisoning. They may be isolated or have  mental illness. We find many people going against the established system, questioning orthodoxy and don’t mind expressing their eccentricities (religious oddities, homosexuality, the victim role). The princess who needs to be saved. Or the knight in shining armour.

Some modern western astrologers suggest that when Hercules crushed the Nemean Lion from this point on, he was representing the way that the established order crushes the weak by making them powerless. People who are powerful rarely have placements here; it specifically belongs to victims. 

Tree of Purva Phalguni

Palash Tree: “Flame of the Forest (Butea Monosperma Tree); They can have crimson, yellow or white flowers with the white ones being highly cherished for their rare and mystical properties. Anti fertility in female rats. High doses can cause abortion. In makle rats it acts as an aphrodisiac. There are many indications that it may be used to help treat various types of cancer. Used to treat stomach worms. Effective for pain relief. Most commonly used in general tonics and as a liver supplement. May also treat osteoporosis and diabetes. 

Flame of the forest also get the name “parrot tree” due to the shape of its leaves, though they also look like lips and tongue of vagina and clitorus. Dyes can be made from the flowers and the wood is extremely hard and water resistant (which is a sign of wood relating to shiva. The leaves can also be used as plates. Agni is said to rule this tree, making it good for charcoal and burning. But it also gets used to separate the calves from the cows when they need the milk for ritual. The flowers are usually blooming for Shivaratri, making them a popular flower for the celebrations. Small pieces of this tree also get used in morning agni hotra rituals in various parts of India. It is commonly related with spring, and love, And all cultures connect it with kamadeva or cupid: the flowers being the arrows or nails of desire. Though it’s also used as the staff for Brahmacharins. Brahma and Narada recited gayatri under a palash tree. 

Key Themes

They evolve to true chivalry, renaissance men or women who people gather around and look up too. They appreciate the literary beauty of life: poetry, music, dance, literature, the fine arts, all that appeals to the heart and speak the highest truths. At the same time they are often strong athletic beautiful people who will stand up for truth and justice despite all odds. Perfect specimens in the Pushkara pada three. 

They seek to bring together truth (the Sun) and beauty (Venus). Or at least with the moon here they are comfortable with the friction between these two things. This is essentially what all these myths and great stories are about, much of the great art. They bend reality to get at a higher truth in the same way light refracts through a prism allowing us to see light in the rainbow rather than just the things illuminated by light. Purva Phalguni represents the visible light spectrum. How clear the light is from any individual’s chart will affect the truth they are reaching for and Venus will have much to say about the beauty they are capable of. In any case, they often will inspire others

They can easily devolve into selfishness, egoism, taking everything personally and basically putting themselves in the centre of everything where they don’t belong. They need a lot of attention and they can seek to get this in the wrong ways. This is a very sexual nakshatra so many like Madonna might use this for attention. Especially if Mars and Venus are working together in the chart somehow. 

This is where we get people working with a kind of sex tantra, worshiping the procreative act represented by the shiva lingam. They seek to create something completely new by bringing opposites together and the way a man and woman come together to make a baby. But this isn’t just about sex, it’s about creativity in general coming from a mix of knowledge of rhythm and harmony that come from putting together different notes to create a whole song (a life) much greater then it’s parts; and luck, divine inspiration; everything just coming together at the right time and place. Ultimately they seek the source of beauty, or the truth through union. They ultimately seek non-dualism not just thru sex, but thru every relationship they have. This whole universe is made of relationships between subjects and objects so every mundane interaction we have in the course of the day becomes an opportunity to see yourselves in the other and realise that although the subject and object appear to be different, they are not. It’s like looking at the rainbow in reverse. All the colours appear to be separate and distinct, but in truth they are not. 

Purva Phalguni represents visible light

Purva Phalguni lies on the visible light spectrum of electromagnetism. Magha takes up the infrared spectrum and Uttara Phalguni is ultraviolet. All of this electromagnetic energy exists from really Low Frequency radio waves to super high frequency gamma waves. They tend to study low frequency as waves and high frequency as particles. Purva Phalguni and visible light involve both. Some of the light is able to bend around a wall to partly illuminate the areas, suggesting waves; but much of the light is blocked when something blocks its way, suggesting it’s a particle. If we look at Leo we will see that it’s about 45% Magha, 45% Purva Phalguni and 10% Uttara Phalguni. The energy that gets through the atmosphere to reach the earth is about 45% infrared, 45% visible light & 10% ultraviolet. We could assume that the Sun in our charts shines with these same properties. We can see, explain, illuminate less than half of the truth, most of it lies beyond our capacity. Purva Phalgunis will, however, try to express the inexpressible. This connection with the sun connects it with the production of vitamin D in the body which is stimulated by light in the visible spectrum. Uttara Phalguni’s Ultraviolet light in the next nakshatra will stimulate photosynthesis. 

Of course all of this brings light, vision, illumination and intelligence all to the forefront for these people. The refraction of light can be from shiny objects which they certainly like. Partners might be seen in this way. They like all kinds of trophies, awards and titles. .Many of the top Purva Phalguni people have literally been awarded knighthoods, the actors and musicians with this placement have top awards like Golden Globes, Academy Awards, peoples choice or guild appreciation awards. 

They like awards ceremonies, weddings, and celebrations where everyone comes together for something greater than themselves. They need to remember those higher reasons for why they do what they do. They need to make sure they are acting as instruments of god and not just for their own selfish desires. In regards to health they should be aware of sexually transmitted diseases due to loose sexual habits which are common. Viruses like herpes in the mouth or genital areas are possible with affliction. Back problems are also common from sitting and laying around, they are prone to becoming lazy. Vision problems and colour blindness are possible with affliction here.

This is why the Shiva lingam is one of the symbols of this nakshatra. It’s not just a shiva lingam, the yoni is there too, as is the space around it which is guarded over by Nandi. Purva Phalguni represents the friction between two things that creates the spark of something new. However, when the Sun is here they have the most difficult task of finding the centre between the two things. It seems to me that the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra’s deal with this for the most part. Until they find that centre they will have much trouble in life. Shivananda & Satguru would perhaps be good mentors. 

That friction between two things is also part of the diplomatic side of things. Writing contracts, negotiating and coming to agreements while still maintaining one’s sovereignty. John Locke was especially concerned with the relationship or agreement between the individual and the state, Many of them like Roger Waters, Richard Gere & Tolstoy have struggled greatly with their wealth and celebrity status in the face of much suffering and poverty in the world. They seek to create something completely new by bringing opposites together and the way a man and woman come together to make a baby. But this isn’t just about sex, it’s about creativity in general coming from a mix of knowledge of rhythm and harmony that come from putting together different notes to create a whole song (a life) much greater then it’s parts; and luck, divine inspiration; everything just coming together at the right time and place. Ultimately they seek the source of beauty, or the truth through union. They ultimately seek non-dualism not just thru sex, but thru every relationship they have. This whole universe is made of relationships between subjects and objects so every mundane interaction we have in the course of the day becomes an opportunity to see yourselves in the other and realize that although the subject and object appear to be different, they are not. They tend to glamourize the media, speech, mantra and are likely to follow the lives of the stars through magazines.
