Masutatsu Oyama: Military aviation, karate founder (4th pada)). One story of Oyama’s youth involves Lee giving young Oyama a seed which he was to plant; when it sprouted, he was to jump over it one hundred times every day. As the seed grew and became a plant, Oyama later said, “I was able to jump between walls back and forth easily.” He trained in aviation with the Japanese military. One story of Oyama’s youth involves Lee giving young Oyama a seed which he was to plant; when it sprouted, he was to jump over it one hundred times every day. As the seed grew and became a plant, Oyama later said, “I was able to jump between walls back and forth easily.” He trained in aviation with the Japanese military. Many of his friends became kamikaze pilots in the war. After the war he would go around and beat up American military police until he was known all over Tokyo. By this time he already had extensive training in various forms of karate and physical education. As he became known for his aggression with the police he went into seclusion in the mountains to train. Oyama greatly credited his reading of The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi, a famous Japanese swordsman, for changing his life completely. Oyama’s own book on Karate is still considered to be the “Karate Bible;” he has written over 30. He suffered from Osteoarthritis and eventually died from lung cancer.
