Qualities of Rohini

Nature: Fixed

Preservation, stability, and completion. Some of the stubbornness of the Taurus bull here, slow and steady wins the race. It can be difficult to change the mind of a Rohini and they like to make things that will last. This can also turn out as sticky attachment or jealousy. Rohini gives fruits that endure: temples, monuments, marriages, and legacies begun here are remembered. Ceremonies, weddings, coronations, starting a new job, opening a business, moving into a new home or any one of the 16 samskaras. Construction projects or laying any kind of literal or figurative foundation can begin on this day. Sundays carry this kind of energy suggesting that it’s also a good position for any kind of spiritual practice that you want to be a fixed routine. Rohini, U. Phalguni, U. Ashadha, U. Bhadra are also fixed.

Motivation: Moksha

The goal here is to accept and let go, to release, liberate oneself and others; not as a renunciate, bat as a creator: the brahma marga of moksha. They are most known for the swelling and growth, but at the end of the incubation period comes the release. They raise their children so they can be free, they grow the crop so that they can harvest, and they learn all the rules so that they can break them. Their attachment to comfort and luxury can bring high expenditure and great loss as well.

Guna: Rajas

These natives have an immense passion for life, form, and sensory enjoyment. This can lead to artistic brilliance or indulgence. Growth and development is pure rajas, but Rohini natives often experience an off-season when the tamasic inert energy becomes strong. This is common in seasonal jobs where people expend huge amounts of energy only to sleep for a couple weeks when it’s all done.

Tri-Deva: Brahma – Creative Energy

A very creative, procreative, productive nakshatra that is focused on growth using the materials at hand. The Moon’s ownership of this nakshatra provides a boundary or a frame for Taurus’s creative beautifying talents to manifest and populate creation. Rohini is the womb of form.

Activity: Balanced

Both fixed and movable tendencies: the stability of Taurus with the rhythmic movement of the Moon. It nurtures continuity while adapting to new forms.

Urdhva Mukha – Facing Upward:

All these things that cause us to look upwards: mountains, church spires, temples, trees, birds, high places, and tall buildings. The intention might also be in building upwards or climbing the corporate ladder, or just looking to the future with hope and optimism. This can also be a good day for climbing ladders, flying in airplanes, launching rockets or missiles or investing, and all other things that will move you up the social ladder. Sun, Moon & Jupiter generally do well in the upward facing nakshatras: Rohini, Ardra, Pushya, U.Phalguni, U.Ashadha, Sravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, U.Bhadrapada.

Lineage: Sage Pulaha

From the Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa. Symbol of growth and creation. Married Daksha’s daughter Kshama and had three sons; Kardama, Kanakapeetha, Urvarivat; and a daughter Peevari. He had three more sons with his granddaughter, Gati: Karmasreshtta, Vareeyamsu, Sahishnu. He helped create the wildlife as well as many of the mythical beasts, including butterflies, lion, wolves and lambs. Since his children were so poorly behaved, he adopted Agastya’s son, Drdhasyu. He practiced intense devotion to Lord Shiva on the banks of the Alaknanda river (the source of the Ganges). He was involved with talking Sage Parashara out of killing all the Rakshasas. When King Bharata renounced his kingdom he went to Sage Pulaha’s ashram for refuge. He had knowledge of theatre and drama.   It’s said that one of his sons, Kardama, was granted two boons by Lord Vishnu: The first was that he get a good wife, and he soon married Devahuti. The second was to have a son who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and Kapila was soon born. His nine daughters all married great sages: Anasuya (wife of sage Atri), Arundhat (wife of sage Vasistha) & Khyati (wife of sage Bhrigu), Gati (2nd wife of sage Pulaha, according to Bhagavata Purana). After their householder duties were complete, Devahuti went to study with her son, Sage Kapila, from whom she learned Sankhya philosophy. Kapila is identified with Agni and is known to have reduced sixty thousand sons of king Sagara to ash with a glance. Kapila is usually shown with jatamukha (jata crown), a beard, and four arms (two holding a pitcher, one holding a shakha and another with a chakra). According to Siva Puran, a Sage named Kardama was born from Brahma’s shadow to be an aspirant, but this may be a different Karadama. The word, ‘kardama’ means: mud, muck, dirty, and is sometimes used to refer to sin. Adi Parva describes him as a virtuous serpent and the grandson of Viraja. It’s said that Kardama was so pleased with his wife that he gave her an airplane with which they travelled the world. His adopted son, Drdhasyu, was a master of scripture from birth as he memorised them from his mother’s womb. He learned stick combat and martial arts from Lord Murgan, and he was also known as Idhmavaha for his ability to carry huge loads of wood from the forest. ‘Idhma’ refers to tinder that is ready to be burned (the perfect student).

Puranic Lineage: Sage Atri

Sage Atri, the Adi-Guru of Jyeshta. One of the Brahma’s mind born sons first born from the eyes of Brahma; one of the twice born. Sage Atri wrote many of the hymns and mantras in the Vedas as well as the Atri Samhita & Atri Smriti. He was famed for his power for detachment as well as for his wife, Anusuya, who was the embodiment of chastity. Her story figures prominently in his life. Sage Atri taught the science of inquiry; some of his famous philosophers who have taught this method are Charvak, Kapila, & Dattatreya. He wrote about architecture and Vasu Shastra. He had broad knowledge of many topics: creation theory, cosmology, mythology, philosophy and genealogy. He wrote a pilgrimage guide book and narrated the legends of many special places around the Godāvarī region in India.

Sati Anasuya, Wife of Sage Atri, feeding Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh

The wives of the great trinity of Gods; Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva; became jealous of Anusuya and wanted to see her fall in prestige so the harassed their husbands to go to her and test her chastity. They came as sadhus, wandering holy men whom she was duty bound to serve, and they demanded she serve them without clothing. She would fail in her duties of hospitality to refuse their request, but of course she would fail in her duty to remain a chaste wife if she fulfilled their request. She agreed to their request, but only after performing a mantra and sprinkling water on them to turn each of them into infants who she then happily fed from her own bread one after the other.
The great gods were so overwhelmed by this that they took her for their own mother and blessed her by being born from her womb. Brahma was born as her son Soma. Vishnu came to being from her womb as Dattatreya. And Durvasa was born as an incarnation of Shiva. Other stories say that When Sage Atri returned home, he embraced the three babies making them merge into one child with three heads. This, of course, is Dattatreya. In his second life Sage Atri had two more children: Aryaman (nobility) and Amala (purity). Mercury was one of his notable grandsons. Atreya, the great Rishi scholar of AyurVedic medicine is also said to be one of his children.
Soma is known as the husband of all 27 nakshatras who are daughters of Daksha. His is the lord of the stars, of flowing waters and of all plants and vegetation. He is the ruler of our hormones allowing us to experience inspiration in ecstasy as well as sacrifice and penance. He has great power over our subconscious and emotional minds and has the ability to regulate our life force through these channels.
Soma has the powers to extract, distill and sprinkle. He has knowledge of plant medicines, growing herbs, and mixing prescriptions.
Dattatreya is notable today for the monastic movements he has inspired. Vaishnavas, Shavites, and Shakti devotees have all been inspired by Dattatreya. He was a know for living a simple life, for his kindness to all and for sharing his knowledge and teaching the meaning of life as he travelled. He owned nothing but was happy. For the Natha lineage he is the Adi-Guru; the first guru with knowledge of Tantric technique; the Lord of Yoga on par with Siva; the whole trinity as a single being. He was later represented as the Nine Natha Gurus. He has numerous temples along the North bank of the Narmada river where pilgrims can get food, shelter and rest.
He is often depicted with four dogs to show his loyalty and caring nature towards even the lowest dogs of this world. They also suggest the four Vedas.  A cow is often there as well to suggest the nourishment and blessing of mother earth. He hols the Japa Mala and water pot of Brahma; the conch and discus of Vishnu; and the trident and drum of Shiva. He is dressed as a forest aesthetic who has renounced world pursuits and practice a meditative yogic lifestyle. He is often praised as a kind of “Honey Bee” gathering nectar from so many flowers. In this way he is an archetype for Syncretism; combining so many mythologies and schools of thought into one. He didn’t accept the status quo and believed that the best way to gain knowledge was through direct perception, critical thinking and contemplation.
Some myths say he started wandering very early in life, he had nothing and no teachers to guide him, but he reached self-awareness from watching nature, meditating immersed in water. Teachings and practices are everywhere and can come from all sources, one merely has to make some effort to see.
He learned form everything, but for our purpose his lessons on the elements can shed some light on our own mystic quest and there are a few more that directly relate with Jyeshta:
1. Earth: He noticed that the earth was steadfastly productive, does its dharma, gets abused, heals and is steady in giving nourishment. From this he learned forbearance, to remain undisturbed even if oppressed, and to keep healing even if others injure you.
2. Water: he observed that water serves all without pride or discrimination. It’s transparent to everyone; purifies and gives life to everyone it touches. For him this meant that a saint discriminates against no one and is never arrogant; he takes the impurity and bad karma from others but is never tainted by it himself.
3. Fire: He noticed that fire purifies and transforms everything it comes in contact with, its energy shapes things. For him is meant that the heat of knowledge reforms everything it comes in contact with, to shape oneself one needs the energy of critical thinking.
4. Air/Wind: He noticed that the wind could pass through everything and everyone, unchanged, unattached like Truth. A strong wind disturbs and changes the world; also just like Truth. He strove to.be free like the wind, yet resolute true to his own power.
5. Sky: The sky is highest, it has no boundaries, no limits, it’s unaffected even if clouds and thunderstorms come and go. For him this meant that the highest within oneself, the Atman (self, soul) has no limits, it is undifferentiated and non-dual no matter what. Let the clouds of materiality pass, be one with your soul and the Universal Self.
6. The Deer: is deceived by his fear, by hunters who beat drums and scare him into a waiting net. The lesson he learned from this was to fear not the noise, and do not succumb to pressure others design for you.
7. Snake: lives in whatever hole that comes his way, willingly leaves bad skin and moults. He learned that yogi can live in any place and must be ready to mould old ideas and body for rebirth of his spirit.
Durvasa seemed to gain spiritual power whenever he cursed someone, which he did often, but it didn’t always work out good for him. He once cursed a righteous king with a frightful demon that sprouted from a single strand of hair. The power of the king’s moral standing easily defended him by raising a more powerful beast who chased Durvasa around until he finally went back to the king to ask pardon. Another time he cursed a young maiden to be forgotten by her lover and she was.
Drona, the mad leader of the Kaurava family was a direct disciple of Atri. Right around the time Yudhishthira announced the death of Drona’s son, Atri came to counsel him to give up the bloody war and stop the destruction that had come from his actions which went against dharma. Drona heeded this advice and went into a completely detached meditation in the middle of the battlefield until he was killed. Atri also crossed paths with the Pandavas during their exile. By Krishna’s blessing Drupati was able to satisfy his hunger with a single grain of rice to avoid the wrath of his curse.

Relationships

Caste: Shudra

They are servants to the land, to the seasons, to their families. They are service orientated, they seek to please and fulfil people’s needs. Rohini is the one who serves the living world: that plow, build, and nurture. Rohini tends to the material, emotional, and aesthetic wellbeing of all, often putting others first. They feel fulfilled when beauty or comfort grow under their care. Their service is sacred. Their labor is a form of devotion. When that service is misdirected, towards pleasing or performing, it can lead to exhaustion or emotional depletion.

Tribe: Human

Human nakshatra’s seek balance between righteousness and sin. They appreciate material pleasures but seek to use them for good. They are not saints or sinners, they are just humans doing the best they can while still occasionally letting themselves and others down. These nakshatra’s generally look out for the welfare of all, but easily succumb to the human condition of chasing after fulfilment thru material comforts. Rohini seeks fulfillment in the world, not outside it. Their moksha comes from experience: to live, love, and learn through attachment. They fall, but they grow through every fall.

Sex / Gender: Female

This is one of the most feminine of the Moon’s wives. The female polarity of Rohiṇī expresses through softness, grace, and magnetism: she draws things to her rather than chasing them. When planets occupy Rohini, they gain charm and receptivity, but also a tendency to overindulge the senses or seek validation. Just as the 2 ox cart draws nourishment back home; Rohini natives draw it towards themselves. Planets here are likely to impart female characteristics to the karakas planets placed here. Both to their natural significations as well as to those they gain by house ownership. Mars (a masculine plant) doesn’t not do well here because one seeks to compete for appreciation like the bodybuilder whose muscles are all for show. Things like steroid use can be found with Mars here and fertility can be burnt out in some way. Rohini is famous for the creative heat produced here, but they have to keep their cool. Mars in Rohini often acts too quickly.

Nadi Kuta:

My research has found four different ways of listing the Nadi Kuta for each nakshatra. B.V.Raman, who infamously used the nakshatra scoring for marriage matching, merely listed them in order: 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3…. This comes from the Jātaka Pārijāta & Kāla Prakāśikā. But South India they follow Prashna Mārga & Muhurta Cintāmaṇi which orders them 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 1, 1, 2, 3….. Other sources simply list the first 9 nakshatras as Adi Nadi, the next nine as Madhya Nada and the last nine as Antya Nadi. This underscores how useless it is to rely on Nakshatra scoring for relationships matching purposes since the Nadi Kuta represents 8 points. Having the same Nadi Kuta is said to be bad for children in the relationship, but North India would say Krittika and Rohini would have different Nadi Kuta showing a positive score for the relationships while South India would say they are a poor match. Considering 8 points is likely to by 1/4 of the total matching score, it completely invalidates the whole system. For this reason I do not recommend using nakshatra matching scores, nor will I even list the Nadi Kuta for each nakshatra.

Male Cobra

The Cobra is the guardian of thresholds. The male king cobra is among the largest venomous snakes in the world, sometimes exceeding 18 feet (5.5 m) in length, though most are closer to 10–13 ft. Males tend to be longer and heavier than females, an uncommon trait among snakes. This perhaps suggest these natives (especially women) may be larger than than their male counterpart. When king cobras feel threatened they will usually raise their bodies and spit venom (up to 6 feet) before attacking. They favour dense forests, overgrown ruins near water and uninhabited places. In courtship, the males will rub up against the female and if she is agreeable they will entwine themselves for up to several hours. If there is any competition with other males it typically remains non-violent. Although the male does not stick around afterwards, it’s believed that he comes back to the same female every year (loyalty without attachment). If the female has been fertilised by many males, she can store the sperm for up to a year and possibly even choose the sperm she wants. Females will build a nest for their eggs and lay about 20 – 30 eggs and then spend the next 2 months defending the nest, until the eggs hatch, and then she leaves. Only one or two survive until adulthood. Male snakes have two penises but only use one at a time. The second penis is only used if they meet another partner shortly after the first one since the sperm from the first one would be used up. The male will occasionally kill a female after having sex, even if they have spent weeks together in a kind of courtship. After killing her he will swallow her and throw her up.

Ayurveda – Health – Healing

Tri-Dosha: Kapha

Water + Earth = Cool, oily, heavy, stable, slow, soft, gross, sticky/cloudy, smooth. Stable, slow, methodical, greedy. Disturbed by sweet (Jupiter), salty (Moon), sour (Venus). Pacified by pungent (Sun) and astringent (Saturn). This is a very wet earthy nakshatra. Planets placed here display these grounding but sometimes stagnating features: sweetness, sentimentality, fertility, and physical fullness. Rohini people can have a sensitive constitution despite being Kapha. They have a low thresh-hold for pain and typical kapha complaints relating to sinusitis, congestion, water retention, oedema or other watery problems relating with kidney and bladder are all common with Rohini natives. Hormone imbalance, emotion issues, and conditions relating to what we call women’s health are all common. Men with Rohini placement might find that they have to directly or indirectly deal with health concerns by women. Oily skin and acne is a common occurrence with the Moon here, especially in their developmental phase. Saturn or Ketu here can bring paralysis or hearing problems. Dietary health problems related to comfort eating, overeating and the resulting obesity are common. For obesity, check the fullness of the Moon and the heft of Jupiter.

Earth element

Grounded, stable, heavy, supportive: you can rely on Rohini.

Body Parts

Primary Body Parts: Shins, calves, ankles & forehead
Secondary Body Parts: Tongue, palate, and throat
Subtle & Psychological: Impressionable, affectionate, and easily swayed by beauty or approval. They seek peace but can drown in sentiment. Rohini favors accumulation, retention, and gestation. To experience love through form; to manifest beauty as a path to liberation (mokṣa through rasa). Over-attachment, possessiveness, self-soothing through excess food or emotion. Can smother rather than nourish.

Ayurveda & Diagnostics

Rahu in Rohini can bring some kind of disfigurement or unusual mark to the shins, calves, ankles, or forehead. Mars can give scars to those parts of the body and Saturn can bring stiffness. Mercury will leave marks and moles Swelling: Rohini deals with all kinds of problems related to swelling. Swelling of any part of the body depending on placement. The tropical swelling of the limbs, swelling of the brain, of the blood vessels, of the pregnant belly, of the penis. Also the swelling of the breath. Breathing problems are also common for Rohini. Congestion of the lungs, wheezing, Addiction: Many of their health problems may be due to over-indulgence or addiction to comfort and pleasure. Food, drugs, Pharma, sex, alcohol and smoking addictions each come with their own problems, but the addictive tendencies of Rohini is usually the underlaying cause. Hormonal Issues: Oestrogen is strongly represented in Rohini. In both men and women oestrogen and testosterone work together to create a hormonal balance; if one goes up, the other goes down. Oestrogen is responsible for the female sexual development between the ages of 8 – 14 and for the continued health of the reproductive organs and the monthly menstrual cycle. The fall in oestrogen levels after menopause is related to osteoporosis. Risk of heart disease increases since oestrogen helps control cholesterol and reduces inflammation. Mood is also affected. When oestrogen levels decrease so does serotonin production which contributes to depression in both sexes and postpartum in women. Monthly oestrogen levels. Note the temperature rise for the incubation period High oestrogen increases the risk of hormonal cancers, auto-immune disease. yeast infection, Hashimoto disease & thyroid dysfunction. In men, high oestrogen is related to low testosterone, weight gain and type 2 diabetes, man boobs, erectile dysfunction, urinary tract problems, decreased libido, depression and/or exhaustion. Thickening of the arteries and the chance of strokes, blood clots or heart attacks is increased.

Health of Planets in Rohini

Sun: Rohini is a bit soft and wet for the Sun so it can be quite humid. It can create sluggish digestion, low metabolism, or issues with vitality when emotional satisfaction is lacking. Natives might experience problems with thyroid, heart rhythm, metabolism, blood sugar, eyes, water retention or emotional inflammation. If strong and well-aspected, the Sun in Rohiṇī gives radiance, glowing skin, and strong fertility; if afflicted, it may bring swelling, hormonal disorders, or liver congestion.
Remedy: Sun salutations, ginger tea, and daily sweat through mild exercise help to restore balance.

Moon: Hormones, reproductive organs, breasts, digestion, and emotional regulation may be effected. Emotions directly affect health. Any hurt or loss of affection can manifest quickly as bloating, heaviness, or water imbalance. If afflicted, natives may suffer menstrual irregularities, thyroid disorders, or psychosomatic weight gain. When balanced, the Moon here gives glowing skin, maternal warmth, and strong Ojas.
Remedy: Maintain emotional boundaries; favor cooling herbs (brahmi, rose, aloe) and rhythmic daily routines.

Mars: Natives may experience inflammation, reproductive burnout, skin eruptions, accidents. Mars overheats this wet nakshatra and passion boils in the blood. This can lead to acne, rashes, fevers, sexual overdrive, or hormonal imbalances. When unrestrained, Mars burns the fertile field of Rohini: fertility issues or premature exhaustion can follow. In men, it may cause testosterone imbalance or adrenal fatigue; in women, PMS, uterine inflammation, or endometriosis. If disciplined, this placement produces remarkable vitality and athletic strength.
Remedy: Cooling diet, moonlight exposure, and patience practices (shitali breath, meditation on water).

Mercury: Throat, vocal cords, digestion, nervous system. Mercury here is sensual and impressionable. Speech and diet directly affect health. Emotional eating, sugar cravings, and allergies arise from mental overstimulation. When afflicted, may bring throat infections, cough, stammering, or digestive nervousness. If strong, gives eloquence, creative articulation, and keen aesthetic sense.
Remedy: Mindful eating, voice exercises, reading aloud sacred texts, reducing sugar and dairy.

Jupiter: Liver, pancreas, obesity, hormonal expansion. Jupiter expands the sweetness of Rohiṇī. Health problems come from overindulgence: weight gain, diabetes, fatty liver, or excessive fluid retention. Yet Jupiter here can give a healing touch and protective vitality if directed toward teaching or caregiving. For women, this placement often brings fertility and healthy pregnancies, but also the risk of excessive Kapha build-up postpartum.
Remedy: Regular fasting days, turmeric, and moderate physical work to prevent stagnation.

Venus: Reproductive health, skin, kidneys, sensual overstimulation. Venus thrives here: this is luxury, pleasure, and beauty personified. The body becomes magnetic and attractive, but prone to moist diseases: yeast infections, ovarian cysts, urinary tract issues, or kidney weakness. Overindulgence in sex, sweets, or affection leads to dullness and lethargy. Balanced Venus here gives artistic beauty, sexual vitality, and emotional radiance.
Remedy: Channel sensuality into art and devotion; avoid excess dairy and sugar; favour sandalwood and rose.

Saturn: Chronic congestion, paralysis, arthritis, depression, hearing loss. Saturn freezes the moisture of Rohini; it congeals emotional and physical fluids. This can cause swelling, stiffness, or melancholy. The mind broods on attachments that cannot be sustained. If disciplined, this placement grants stability and endurance in healing professions, but emotional heaviness must be digested through meditation or solitude.
Remedy: Warming movement, sesame oil massage, long walks in the sun, and letting go of guilt and regret.

Rahu: Nervous exhaustion, addictions, hormonal chaos, compulsive eating. Rahu magnifies Rohini’s craving nature: pleasure without satisfaction. The appetite becomes endless, leading to bingeing, sugar dependency, sensual obsession, or cosmetic fixation. Psychologically, there is emotional vacuum syndrome; the body tries to fill what the heart cannot contain. If balanced through awareness, Rahu here gives magnetic charisma and hypnotic charm, often in performers or healers.
Remedy: Avoid intoxicants and excess sugar; practice fasting, prāṇāyāma, and clear creative expression.

Ketu: Eating disorders, detachment from the body, hormonal irregularity, loss of taste or pleasure. Ketu dries the lush fields of Rohini. There can be weak digestion, low libido, infertility, or sudden weight loss. Emotionally, it creates disinterest in comfort; the native may unconsciously reject nourishment, leading to depletion. When spiritualized, Ketu here brings deep detachment from sensual illusion like the yogi who transcends desire.
Remedy: Grounding foods, mindful embodiment (yoga, dance), and connection to earth through routine and touch.

Tantric & Ayurvedic Remedies

Jambu Tree – Jambula – Black plum – Syzygium Cumini

An evergreen that grows up to 30m tall and can live for more than 100 years. It grows rapidly and is often considered an invasive species, especially on small islands. The wood can easily be made water resistant which makes it valuable for building homes (door and window frames), making tools for the farm, wheels for the bullock carts and furniture. It’s considered too hard for common use. Villagers like to make durable furniture from it. It’s a beautiful tree with dense foliage which provides good shade. Flowers bloom in March / April and provide a nice fragrance. Fruit (rather large berries) are ready in May / June and are eaten mostly by small animals, mammals and birds. Most of the fruit goes from green to blood red. But there is a variety which produces white fruit. The fruit is sweet, mildly sour, astringent and eating it leaves the tongue red. Leaves smell like turpentine and provide good nutrition for livestock.

Jambula tree, the tree of Rohini
Jambula

Humans typically eat the fruit raw or make it into jams. Raw fruit is 83% water, 16% carbs, 1% protein, hardly any fat, about 60 calories, some vitamin C and almost no other nutrient source. It’s very good for diabetics. The leaves are used to decorate the marriage tent. Krishna is said to have had a symbol of jambu fruit on his right foot.
The flavour is astringent, sweet & slightly sour. The guna is heavy, dry & cooling. It’s potency is cooling. The post digestive effect in sweet. It pacifies pitta & kapha; but is likely to mildly aggravate vata. Ut’s typically used as Antidiabetic, digestive, astringent, blood purifier, urinary tonic. Jambū balances the wet heaviness of Rohiṇī by cooling and drying it. Its astringent sweetness steadies desire and calms excess fluids — a perfect remedy for Kapha imbalance, sugar disorders, or emotional overeating.
Some say the sandal wood tree or Indian fig also have some relation with Rohini.
Banyan might be considered an alternate tree.

Place: Storerooms, granaries, ornament chests

Fertile, decorated, or well-kept places like storerooms, granaries, gardens, cowsheds, or rooms adorned with beauty and scent. Rohini thrives where life is stored, nurtured, or displayed; fertile or decorated spaces.

Incense: Sandalwood (Chandana)

Sandalwood cools the Moon’s heat, refines sensuality into devotion, and steadies the mind in beauty. Its fragrance awakens sattva amidst pleasure.

Colour: Rose coloured or pale cream

These colors express the the non-aggressive but active nature of Rohini. They are passionate but soft, open, clear, inviting.

Direction: East

Planets here are likely to give their results in the east. Sadhana for Rohini asks us to face east towards the rising sun. When this asterism is placed in the easter quadrant of the chart it gains extra strength to give results.

Ayurvedic Remedies

Taurus is Kapha & Rohini is Kapha, so these folks have to keep moving, stay warm and open to the world, but also practice a bit of discipline and austerity to curb sensual excess and dry out the moisture. A little spiritual heat can help channel their indulgent nature: fasting, breath-work, sun exposure, emotional catharsis, and detachment practices. They do well with a little song and dance, a visit to the Krishna temple, or a bit of Osho dynamic meditation. They do well with a steady, fairly long term wellness routine that nourishes the body mind and spirit. They don’t do well as acetic renunciate; they need to have a little fun, feel, connect with their bodies. They often have to practice some form of letting go, they can simply hold on too long in bad relationships, to children that have to be set free, to habits and beliefs that don’t serve them.

Diet: They want to follow an anti-kapha diet, dry, light, and pungent foods, roasted grains, barley, millet, lentils, lightly spiced vegetables. Reduce heavy, oily, and sweet foods like dairy, cheese, fried snacks, and refined sugars. Use spices that bring warmth: ginger, black pepper, mustard seed, and cinnamon. Take astringent fruits such as pomegranate, apple, guava, and jamun (Jambū), Rohini’s own tree fruit. Drink warm water with lemon in the morning to keep digestion kindled. Avoid late-night eating or long daytime naps, which increase Kapha stagnation. Periodic intermittent fasting or skipping one meal weekly helps maintain clarity and rhythm.

Herbal medicines:
Trikatu churna (dry ginger, black pepper, long pepper) to kindle digestion.
Manjishtha or Neem for skin purification and lymphatic flow.
Punarnava for water retention, edema, and kidney health.
Guggulu for sluggish metabolism and obesity.
Shatavari (for women) and Ashwagandha (for men) in moderation — only when lethargy or hormonal depletion occurs.
Aloe vera juice to balance heat and promote gentle cleansing of reproductive tissues.
Rose or Brahmi to soothe the emotional heart and calm lunar sensitivity.
Note: With all that said Rohini natives also have to avoid excessive tonics or overly nourishing rasāyanas as they will increase Kapha heaviness for Rohini natives.

Wellness practice: They need creative expression and movement: music, dance, gardening, painting, walking, swimming, yoga, growing, raising, circulating. They need to get some sunlight adn get moving early. Prāṇāyāmas, Kapālabhāti & Bhastrikā (with moderation) burn excess Kapha; Nāḍī Śodhana cools emotional fluctuations.

Reality Check: Rohini’s tenderness can easily become self-indulgence. The desire to nurture can turn into control; the pursuit of beauty into vanity; comfort into inertia. Rohini natives must learn to let love breathe; to give and release in equal measure. A re read of the bhajavad Gita can always be good for them to remember to let go of the fruit of their labor or their love. Love, like the moon, waxes only because it also wanes.”

Mantras for Rohini

Follow these mantras Monday mornings or whenever the Moon transits Rohiṇī. Offer rose petals, sandalwood incense, and a small vessel of water (symbol of the Moon).

Om Rohinyai Namah” or “Om Chandrāya Namah” while offering sandalwood or rose water to a Jambu tree on Fridays or Mondays.

Oṁ Brahmaṇe Namaḥ, Oṁ Aiṁ Sarasvatyai Namaḥ, Oṁ Prajāpataye Namaḥ — This triple mantra sanctifies the creative process: conception (Brahmā), articulation (Sarasvatī), and manifestation (Prajāpati).

Ṛg Veda 10.121 – “Hiraṇyagarbha Sūkta” for Brahma 1. IN the beginning rose Hiranyagarbha, born Only Lord of all created beings.
He fixed and holdeth up this earth and heaven. What God shall we adore with our oblation?
2 Giver of vital breath, of power and vigour, he whose commandments all the Gods acknowledge -.
The Lord of death, whose shade is life immortal. What God shall we adore with our oblation?
3 Who by his grandeur hath become Sole Ruler of all the moving world that breathes and slumbers;
He who is Loord of men and Lord of cattle. What God shall we adore with our oblation?
4 His, through his might, are these snow-covered mountains, and men call sea and Rasā his possession:
His arms are these, his are these heavenly regions. What God shall we adore with our oblation?
5 By him the heavens are strong and earth is stedfast, by him light’s realm and sky-vault are supported:
By him the regions in mid-air were measured. What God shall we adore with our oblation?
6 To him, supported by his help, two armies embattled look while trembling in their spirit,
When over them the risen Sun is shining. What God shall we adore with our oblation?
7 What time the mighty waters came, containing the universal germ, producing Agni,
Thence sprang the Gods’ one spirit into being. What God shall we adore with our oblation?
8 He in his might surveyed the floods containing productive force and generating Worship.
He is the God of gods, and none beside him. What God shall we adore with our oblation?
9 Neer may he harm us who is earth’s Begetter, nor he whose laws are sure, the heavens’ Creator,
He who brought forth the great and lucid waters. What God shall we adore with our oblation?
10 Prajāpati! thou only comprehendest all these created things, and none beside thee.
Grant us our hearts’ desire when we invoke thee: may we have store of riches in possession.

Purāṇic Brahmā Dhyāna Śloka to be used before teaching, composing, or creative work; harmonizes the rajas of Rohiṇī into sattvic order: Satyaṁ jñānam anantaṁ Brahmā, Hiraṇyagarbhaḥ Prajāpatiḥ; Caturmukho mahātejāḥ sarva-sṛṣṭyādi-kartā ca. “Brahmā, the infinite truth and knowledge, the golden-born creator, the four-faced radiant one who initiates all creation.” Om Aim Hrīm Shrīm Brahmaṇe Namaḥ

Vāk Sūkta (Ṛg Veda 10.125 – “Speech Hymn”) — Saraswati as Vac 1. I TRAVEL with the Rudras and the Vasus, with the Ādityas and All-Gods I wander.
I hold aloft both Varuṇa and Mitra, Indra and Agni, and the Pair of Aśvins. 2 I cherish and sustain high-swelling Soma, and Tvaṣṭar I support, Pūṣan, and Bhaga.
I load with wealth the zealous sdcrificer who pours the juice and offers his oblation 3 I am the Queen, the gatherer-up of treasures, most thoughtful, first of those who merit worship.
Thus Gods have stablished me in many places with many homes to enter and abide in. 4 Through me alone all eat the food that feeds them,—each man who sees, brewhes, hears the word outspoken
They know it not, but yet they dwell beside me. Hear, one and all, the truth as I declare it. 5 1, verily, myself announce and utter the word that Gods and men alike shall welcome.
I make the man I love exceeding mighty, make him a sage, a Ṛṣi, and a Brahman. 6 I bend the bow for Rudra that his arrow may strike and slay the hater of devotion.
I rouse and order battle for the people, and I have penetrated Earth and Heaven. 7 On the world’s summit I bring forth the Father: my home is in the waters, in the ocean.
Thence I extend o’er all existing creatures, and touch even yonder heaven with my forehead. 8 I breathe a strong breath like the wind and tempest, the while I hold together all existence.
Beyond this wide earth and beyond the heavens I have become so mighty in my grandeur.

Saraswati: She who is fair as the jasmine and the moon, robed in white, holding the vīṇā and a rosary, seated on a white lotus. She who is adored by Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva. May that Goddess Sarasvatī remove the dullness of my mind. Oṁ Aiṁ Sarasvatyai Namaḥ — Sarasvatī’s bīja, awakening speech, intellect, and creative clarity.

Śrī Vidyā: Invoking the fertile, beautiful, and luminous power that creates and sustains form. Om Aiṁ Hrīṁ Śrīṁ Tripurā Sundaryai Namah Aiṁ (Sarasvatī) – articulation and knowledge. Hrīṁ (Bhuvaneśvarī) – manifestation through love. Śrīṁ (Lakṣmī) – prosperity and completion. Together they represent the triple beauty of Rohiṇī: articulate (Aiṁ), magnetic (Hrīṁ), and fruitful (Śrīṁ). Śrī Vidyā is the Tantric worship of the Goddess as the living intelligence of creation — Tripurā Sundarī, the “Beautiful One of the Three Worlds.” Her energy moves through three currents: Icchā śakti – the power of desire (Moon), Jñāna śakti – the power of knowing (Mercury), and Kriyā śakti – the power of doing (Venus). Rohiṇī, being the Moon’s favorite, is the field in which icchā śakti ripens into creation.

Exposition

Rohini Nakshatra is a sensitive and parental nakshatra. She is the muse who stokes our creative fires. From the Rohini perspective Brahma is any new thing that rises from within us after some incubation period.

Rohini is the good daughter who becomes the perfect wife: fair skinned like Gauri, attractive, beautiful, fertile, passionate, and sexual. (But also like any new development it should serve us.) The Reddish One can often be found in pink collar jobs typically reserved for women: nursing, teaching, social services, personal care and service attendant, entertainment, fashion, beauty, wellness. She is the archetypical beautiful woman who needs attention; she needs to feel appreciated for her gentle caring beautiful nature. And if they are not getting the attention they feel they deserve, they will find it elsewhere. Rohini women are typically beautiful with large breasts and wide hips, but both sexes usually have desirable features, a seductive voice, emotional speech, and beautiful eyes.

And if they are not getting the attention they feel they deserve, they will find it elsewhere. Rohini women are typically beautiful with large breasts and wide hips, but both sexes usually have desirable features, a seductive voice, emotional speech, and beautiful eyes.

There can be some tension in Rohini between freedom and boundaries just as a young girl seeks greater freedom from the protective boundaries of her father or family. Unless they feel protected they might not go too far from home. Being the favourite of the moon, Rohini nakshatra natives are often privileged in some way. They are a special breed who are afforded allowances that the rest of us don’t get. This can be the privilege of the rich and famous, it can be diplomatic privilege, a privilege of who you know, Rohini’s typically know who to use any kind of privilege to their advantage. They can also be good at making others feel as though they are privileged as well. And of course they typically have some kind of special privileges to offer.

Rohini is also a very creative nakshatra, but compared to Krittika it’s a more reflective creativity. Instead of creating something new and unique, Rohini is more reflective of the collective consciousness. They reflect what is going on around them. They are the proper conditions needed for growth and development. They can be very grounded people; free to move around, but only within certain boundaries. They typically stay within the box. This can make them come off as a bit rigid when you come up against their boundaries. They may also have to deal with issues of emotional attachment, not only in relationships but to certain comforts and luxuries. They don’t like to leave their comfort zones. This also comes up in a variety of ways where people have their zones they have to cover. This can relate with a variety of look-out jobs, watchmen, travelling salesmen, product reps, or servers who divide up a space with each of them taking care of their zone; their area.

Children are strong themes with this Nakshatra. A mix of legitimate and illegitimate children seems to be normal with people who have this nakshatra. Generally more girls than boys, but many of the charts I’ve seen have at least one male child. The wife of a male who has this position is often a homemaker and women with this are often themselves taking care of home and children. Other caretaking duties are possible as well with this placement: high end houses-sitters, building and landscapers, agriculturists.

Herbal medicines and other food stores are strongly represented here. As agriculturalists, Rohini nakshatra natives are not usually the unskilled help, but rather the ones who know how to use, mix and preserve the bounty of the land and forests. They are usually skilled in food preparation or preservation, growing crops and raising animals, bartending, making natural soaps and a variety of such crafts. Martha Stewart’s 3rd and 6th lord Jupiter Rohini’s 8th house transformed the modern kitchen and kept her hands busy on national television.

They may also have an interest in following the natural rhythm of the seasons. They may also have an interest in farmer’s almanac type astrology offered by Tropical astrology to track seasonal changes. This can relate with all kinds of seasonal occupations: fishing season, hunting season, construction season, television seasons, sports season, agriculture… everything that only happens when the season is right.

The herbal medicines aspect of this nakshatra is where they often get into trouble. Comfort and luxury, pleasant feelings are necessary with this placement. This can lead to self medication via numerous feel good drugs or pain killers. Addiction problems are not uncommon. And for some Rohini nakshatra natives their insistence on drawing attention to themselves can become cheap and sexually self-deprecating.

Rohini nakshatra natives can play numerous roles with children, aiding in their growth and development of skills, fostering their natural abilities. Rohini people are not usually agents of change (though other placements in a person’s chart can bring this out), they grow and develop what is at hand whether they are a coach or a land developer. They are like Kamadenu, the wish-fulfilling cow, they can nurture and develop anything to bring prosperity.

The materialistic side of this nakshatra makes people good with handling money and working in banks or commercial fields, making deals, sales, and advertising. Again it’s all about growth of one’s portfolio, storing valuables, seeding the market, investing.

Pride & vanity are the dangers of growth and development; as we get better, we get cockier and more prone to mistakes. And as much as Bharani talks about responsibilities, here in Rohini we find our rights. Any of the emotions that swell and then burst can be felt with Rohini nakshatra placements: sadness, excitement, shyness, pride, vanity. And what happens when pride or vanity burst? One goes away with their head hung in shame and they find a quiet place to lick their wounds. But any excuse for a luxury resort near water will usually do. There can also be a lot of jealousy surrounding Rohini people though they can be oblivious to it.

Auspicious Activities:

This is the most auspicious star for weddings and ceremonies that signify big changes in our life, new beginnings: self improvement, spiritual practice or installing religious icons or objects, planting a garden. Even wearing new clothes can impart them with auspiciousness. Being the Moon’s own beloved star, Rohiṇī favors all acts of conception, whether of art, life, or ideas. It’s good for the beginning of any incubation period. It’s a great day for sex if you want a baby or a relationship (especially if Jupiter happens to be aspecting this Moon). Projects started or undertaken when the Moon is in Rohini will remain. As a Dhruva (fixed) nakṣatra, Rohiṇī sustains whatever begins. It’s a star of permanence, beauty, and fruition, ideal for any undertaking meant to endure. This makes it a good day to take any kind of serious vow. Construction projects will flourish and all activities will be seen through until completion.

Special Considerations

  • Moon is moolatrikona for the last 27ºs of Taurus.
  • Pushkara Bhaga: 14º (Pada 2: Taurus Navamsha). Nourishing point. Moons transit brings auspicious and nourishing results. Good time to plan auspicious events. Any planet placed here will produce auspicious and nourishing results.
  • Pushkara Navamsha: 13º 20’ – 16º 40’ (Pada 2: Taurus Navamsha).
  • Krishna has Moon & Ascendant in Rohini.
  • The favourite wife of Chandra, the good daughter and perfect wife.

Stories & Symbols of Rohini

Many of the stories that relate with the father – daughter relationship or the perfect wife relate with Rohini.

Rohini: The Favourite of the 27 Wives

Chandra & Rohini (Tara) making waves.
Chandra & Rohini (Tara) making waves.

Chandra was married to 27 daughters of Daksha, the 27 Nakshatras, and he promised their father that he would treat them all equally. But he had a favourite, Rohini. Then one day out of his infatuation for her he decided to stay in her house and stopped visiting his other wives. This angered Daksha and he cursed Chandra with a wasting disease like tuberculosis. Chandra appealed to Lord Shiva and out of mercy Shiva allowed him wax and wane.

Brahma

Brahma, the creator and father of all wanted to begin the process of creation and fell in love with his own daughter Usha (or Shatrupa or Saraswati depending on which version we’re following). He was so captivated by his daughter’s beauty that four heads sprouted to allow him to face every direction and track her every movement. When she fled to the heavens a fifth head looked upwards. She changed into a doe deer to escape him but he changed into a buck and chased her down in order to produce earthy beings. Shiva, outraged at the incest, is said to have either chopped off one of Brahma’s heads (or shot him in the thigh with an arrow from his mighty bow).

“We are what we think. All that we are arises in our thoughts and with our thought we make the world.” Dhammapada

Brahmas children are all born of the mind like ideas we get that just won’t leave us alone. His ten male children who were Prajapatis just like him did not attract his attention, but his 11th child, the daughter who takes on so many forms, captivated him like a muse and stoked his creative fires. This is what happens to an idea in our own minds when we start to get excited about carrying it into reality. This is Maya, so beautiful and so seductive, and it’s so easy to get carried away with her.

Brahman kept sprouting heads so he could keep watching her. Each head represents one of the five elements. The first four elements (earth, water, fire, air) are terrestrial elements. His fifth head represents space, spirit, heaven. All he could see was the external form and lost sight of the spiritual truth. When he begins to see So-Many-Forms (Shatarupa) in heaven, the gods get angry and their collective anger creates Rudra who severs the idea at its source. Sometimes we get so carried away with an idea that we cannot see the impending doom that’s just around the corner. Now Brahma’s four heads are continually reciting the four Vedas in penance.

There are deeper lessons in this story about attraction and desire. Our senses seek out what is beautiful and pleasant. All Brahma sees is a beautiful creature taking on so many forms. He’s inspired to create and does not see that she is already his own creation. He forgets that she is a part of him, she is but a reflection of his own creative fires, creative potential. For this he must look past the external forms and see her for who she is inside. Rohini people may feel like no one sees them for who they are inside, they just see the external form of things.

The lessons of this story reverberate through Mrigashira which takes the perspective of the young girl who changes herself into a deer. We will then see Rudra’s perspective with Ardra. There are other stories about Brahma’s pride clouding him from truly seeing others.

Brahma’s Pride

Brahma, the god of Rohini, with his daughter Saraswati
Brahma with his daughter Saraswati

Pride can easily devolve into self centered conceit, arrogance, and superiority. Brahma once went to visit Shiva and completely ignored Kartikeya while coming and going so Kartikeya decided to teach him a lesson. Brahma was his teacher at the time so Kartikeya asked him if he knew the Vedas, which he did, and then asked him if he knew the meaning of “Om,” which he did not. Kartikeya asked him how he could know the Vedas if he did not know the meaning of “Om.” Some say that he put Brahma in prison for his pride.

Another time when Brahma was in the ecstatic of meditation the beautiful Apsara, Mohini, came along and wanted to marry him. He was furious with her for taking him out of meditation. He was rude to her and sent her away, but she did not go away without uttering a curse that he would not be worshiped by anyone because of his pride. When he went to Vishnu to complain about the curse he say so many other creators who looked just like him only with more and more heads. He only had four and some of the other Brahmas had hundreds. Vishnu had to explain to his that although he was the creator of his own universe, there were many universes in this world.

“Within each head lies an entire universe, and there are a lot of heads in this universe.” — Unknown

Brahma doesn’t care what he creates, he can’t see anyone else but himself. He is blinded by his own desire to create, he doesn’t think of good and evil. But creation is as much of a responsibility as it is a form of power. Once when he lied to Shiva about finding the end to his great jyoti lingam, Shiva chopped off one of his heads and restricted his worship to a single temple in Pushkar. When Shiva chops off heads he takes on his fierce Bhairava and consequently must complete a gruelling penance for the sin of killing a Brahmin. Brahma’s head was attached to Bhairava’s hand and he spent 12 years walking the four corners of India as a naga baba before coming back to Varanasi where his past sins were washed away.

Vac & Saraswati are the same.
Vac & Saraswati are the same.

It should be noted that in the Shiva Purana, Lord Bhairava is afflicted with Brahmahatya dosha in his astrology chart. This is typically a curse of Brahmins from your past life that will cause you to suffer in this life. Even lord Rama’s ancestry has to suffer the effects of this curse for killing Ravana who was a brahmin and devotee of Lord Shiva. The most common manifestation in the chart is when Jupiter is in close conjunction or mutual aspect with Jupiter. The remedies are to worship Lord Shiva through a fire ceremony or Abhishek & feed Brahmins; also one must be good to cows.

Of interest to my Kashmiri Shaiva friends is the story of Brahma merging with his mind-born daughter Vac in order to create living beings. Vac is sound or word and it connects this nakshatra to Pratyabhijna philosophy, the power of the syllables, the mothers, Matrika, Malini, and Saraswati. From this perspective creation begins when a vowel (a mother) and a consonant (a father) come together. (this is sometimes described the other way). The mass of these syllabic combinations makes up the chaotic shabdarashi (mass of sound). From this are selected the most desirable ones to form words and thoughts and from here all creation begins. From this perspective vibration is the basis of energy. Astrology can be seen from this kind of energetic perspective with each planet in the chart representing a crossing point of all the energies like chakra

There is a distinct sensitivity to sound that is good for music and dance, but also for creating an atmosphere.

Prajapati: Lord & Protector of Creation

Prajapati represents a category of gods that point to the heat or desire of the mind to create something. Prajna means creative and procreative powers. Pati means lord. The “Lord of procreation.” Even Shiva is considered a Prajapati since he is head of his own lineage of ghosts and devils and these sorts of things. Lists of 7, 10, 16 or 21 prajapatis are common. Prajapati is the spiritual teacher that is inside each of us; the wandering eternal soul, our procreative sexual powers, and knower of the individual soul.

The original prajapati was born from a golden egg in the primeval sea. “His sound became the sky, the earth, the seasons. His inhalation created the Devas, fire and light; his exhale created the Asuras and darkness. Then, by combining with the goddess of language (Vac), he made all of space and time. He endows all his children with sexual desire so they will reproduce, and with anger so they cannot challenge the gods.

Brahma came from a lotus that grew out of Vishnu’s belly button while he was reclining on a five headed snake while they floated upon the depths of Shiva’s abyss. From Brahma came the 10 Great Sages, and one daughter, including Marichi and Daksha. Marichi’s son Kashyap (the father of all living beings) married 13 daughters of Daksha. Kashyap and his wife Aditi had numerous children, but their child Vishvan had two important children: Manu (the first man) & Yama (the first mortal; the first to die). Manu had 10 sons and from them came the human species.

Parjanya:

A few characters of mythology carry this name: the 8th Aditya, a Rishi, a Gandharva, and the guardian of the month of Krittika. Parjanya & Prithvi are sometimes called the mother and father of all beings. He is the lord of rain who fertilises the germination of seeds. A rain bull controlled by Indra: thunder is his roar, lightening his strike. Also considered the udder of the rain cow; the rain being compared to mothers milk.

“Lift up the mighty vessel, pour down water and let the liberated streams rush forward. Saturate both the earth and the heavens with fatness and let the drink be abundant for the cows.” (a prayer to Parjanya)

Daksha

Daksha was born from the thumb of Brahma. His name means “the able one,” “the dexterous one,” “the honest one.” He’s the father of Sati, Shiva’s first wife, and he’s most famous for his disdain for Shiva. This makes him a strong symbol of order in the face of chaos. But his ultimate downfall reminds us that we cannot organise chaos out of the system of life. Which is ultimately why we have to protect the weak by giving them certain rights and privileges. For example, nobody complains about women’s carriages on Indian trains. We have to honour the great unknown. It was during Daksha’s Yagna (worship) that Sati immolated herself and subsequently ended up scattered across India as the 51 Shakti Peeths.

It’s said that Daksha first tried to populate the world with his mind, but that wasn’t effective for increasing the physical numbers. So we started putting masculine and feminine pairs together in his Yagya. This may also relate to the atomic theory of putting positive and negative ions together. but that’s a study for another day. I tend to see the planetary owners Venus and Moon as the sperm and the egg. Which brings us back to the beginning when Brahma was born from the golden egg.

Krishna

It’s said that Krishna had both his Moon and Ascendant in Rohini. Rohini people often like the song and dance and sensuality of the Hare Krishna path. (Note that there are numerous charts for Krishna but they all have three placements in common: Moon & ascendant in Rohini and the Sun in Leo.) He was known as the ideal lover as well as the ideal diplomat. It’s also been suggested that the Mahabharata war started because of him. This makes me wonder if perhaps Helen of Troy also had some strong Rohini placements.

Banyan Tree

Banyan Tree, the Tree of Rohini Nakshatra
Banyan Tree

Known as Kalpavriksha, the tree that fulfils one’s wishes and provides material wealth. It is the holiest tree in India, considered immortal. It gives longevity to Lord Brahma himself. It’s a large tree with large leaves and spreading branches to offer protective shade and shelter. It is sometimes called Bahupada, the one with several feet, because of the way the roots extend down from the branches to create a new root base. A Shiva lingam is often found at its base and these trees act as a resting place for wandering Sadhus who will stay under the banyan at the edge of town rather than entering the town itself. Shiva also looks to the North which is the direction of death. He is the one who helps us face death without fear. This also connects the Banyan to Lord Yama and one is often found near cremation grounds. Grass does not grow under a Banyan.

Since it’s not a tree that allows for renewal or rebirth, it is avoided for purposes of marriage or fertility though the leaves are often used in other rituals. A paste of bark and leaves can be used to stop excessive bleeding. The sap of the tree can be used for piles, pain, and lumbago. Chewing on the ariel root is a good astringent for cleaning the teeth. It’s also used for treatments for leukorrhea, female sterility & diabetes.

Pre-Pubesent Girl

I believe this relates to the “daughter” energy of young girls as well as their procreative and incubative potential. Rohini reminds us that the naturally passive and agreeable nature of young girls is why we offer them privileges and protection. Like all children in some form or another, we seek to protect them from their own naivety. The combination of Moon and Venus energy can be very seductive and tempting, and since they are practically defenceless they are easy prey for those who do not have control over their desires. They are not completely defenceless though: beauty and innocence are a form of defence in themselves since people generally don’t like to harm beautiful people or things that pose no threat to anyone. Such no threatening traits also inspire others to stand in their defence.

I have heard from many women over the years that they can sometimes be scared to say no to a man. There seems to be this subconscious fear of violence from men which is really just a reflection of their own defencelessness. How do they deal with this? They become agreeable. They say “yes” even when they want to say “no.” It’s completely irrational and many women are aware of this. This is very much a Rohini trait. And this is also why traditional societies put so much effort into protecting young girls and women. Modern woman call it repression and complain about sexual assault, harassment and date rape. Traditional women complain about their mother in law. Rohini is the most valuable and vulnerable jewel in the community: Take care of it!

It can also be noted that between the ages of 10 – 12 young girls go through a remarkable growth spurt that usually sees them towering over boys. I suspect this might also be one of nature’s defence mechanisms that help keep them safe through some of their tenderest years as they change from little girls to young women. Their height grows very quickly and fat deposits usually begin to form in their hips and breasts a couple years before menstruation begins. (see the stories of Brahma and Prajapati)

The Reddish One

Just “reddish” not quite red; the colour of a blushing young girl’s cheeks. Embarrassment or passion are two of the main reasons for this, but we will explore some medical topics in the section on health that may be related with Rohini.

The Growing One

Swelling, growing relating with fertility, agriculture, pregnancy, water build up, high tide, balloons. Anything that swells like excitement, suspense. Natural disasters like volcanoes and tsunamis have occurred when the moon is passing thru Rohini. All this talk about stock market bubbles and housing bubbles is all related to Rohini.

Fish

A Christian symbol. It’s actually a symbol for a Greek Acronym: “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Our Saviour.” When this is written in Greek, the first letter of each word makes up the Greek word for fish, so many temples just put a simple fish symbol. It also acted as a symbol to show those who had been baptised in water and thus re-born into the life of Christ. It’s often a symbol of faith since Christ was able to feed thousands of people with just a few fish.

The shape of a fish in the lines of your hand at the bottom of your life line is auspicious for wealth and spirituality, but it brings fear or water and gives a person the sniffles.

Fertility and abundance due to the number of eggs they lay and their similarities with the sperm. They are also practically defenceless and also silent creatures.

Ox-Cart Pulled by Two Oxen

This was all they had to move large loads. They are still used by farmers in India and many other parts of the world to haul their crops.

Health

Shins, Calves, Ankles & Forehead

Rahu in Rohini can bring some kind of disfigurement or unusual mark to the shins, calves, ankles, or forehead. Mars can give scars to those parts of the body and Saturn can bring stiffness. Mercury will leave marks and moles.

Kapha Problems: Rohini people can have a sensitive constitution despite being Kapha. Men with Rohini placement might find that they have to indirectly deal with a lot of women’s problems.

Swelling: Rohini deals with all kinds of problems related to swelling. Swelling of any part of the body depending on placement. The tropical swelling of the limbs, swelling of the brain, of the blood vessels, of the pregnant belly, of the penis. Also the swelling of the breath.

Breathing problems are also common for Rohini. Congestion of the lungs, wheezing,

Addiction: Many of their health problems may be due to over-indulgence or addiction to comfort and pleasure. Food, drugs, Pharma, sex, alcohol and smoking addictions each come with their own problems, but the addictive tendencies of Rohini is usually the underlaying cause.

Hormoones

Female sev hormones
Estrogen dominance
Estrogen

Monthly oestrogen levels. Note the temperature rise for the incubation period.

Stars of Rohini

Aldebaran is recognised as the red eye of the ‘V’ shaped face of the bull, Taurus; the ‘bullseye.’ It’s also connected with a constellation Hyades, the water nymphs, the “moist daughter” who were the sisters of Pleiades who also brought rain. When one of their sisters was killed in a hunting accident, the others wept so sincerely that they were honoured with a place of significance in the night sky. The Egyptians thought it was being held int he hand of Osiris (Orion), with the three stars of his belt pointing to it. In Vedic culture this was said to be the abode of Brahma and the Prajapatis. The Babylonians considered it the prime fiducial, which is the same as calling it the Father of the Fathers; the chief Prajapati.
The name Aldebaran comes from the Arabic al Dabarān, meaning, ‘the follower,’ because it seems to follow the Pleiades. But it might be noted that these folks are typically followers of dharma, or Santana Dharma, Ptolemy gave it the name Lampaurus (the beacon). A couple thousand years ago it marked the spring equinox. These days, the Sun transits over Aldebaran in the last days of May.

Archangel Michael

“There was war in the sky. Michael and his angels made war on the dragon. The dragon and his angels made war” — Revelations 12:7 “But Michael, the archangel, when contending with the devil and arguing about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him an abusive condemnation, but said, ‘May the Lord rebuke you!’” —Jude 1:9 Aldebaran is known as the Guardian of the Eastern Sky and it’s connected with the Archangel Micheal, the angel of Justice; the defender of truth, divine will and divine realisation. The work Micheal means, “one who is like god.” Aldevaran is sometimes called “god’s eye;” the spiritual third eye or the “single eye” of the New Testament: “If thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light,” said the Christ (Matthew 6:22). He is the defender of the divine feminine, while his opponent sitting across from him in the one who penetrates the divine feminine. Micheal is the peak purity of the divine Masculine energy. The Patron Saint of police, military, chivalry, paramedics, bankers, grocers, the sick, suffering, poor, destitute, Catholics, Jews, the Vatacin, France, and Germany. He is seen as a champion against paganism and heresy. He is commonly shown holding a set of scales, a sword (possibly flaming) and a banner. According to Legends of the Jews, archangel Michael was the chief of a band of angels who questioned God’s decision to create man on Earth. The entire band of angels, except for Michael, was then consumed by fire. Michael is the Commander and Chief of the heavenly Army. Responsible for the care and protection of the people of God, protecting the souls of the righteous in Paradise. As the defended of Israel he was an enemy of Samuel, the accuser of Israel. Their rivals started back when Samuel was elected from heaven and tried to take Michael out with him; until God intervened. He’s the one who defeated Satan and threw him out of heaven. It’s suggested that he took on Satan’s duties in Heaven after he was caste out. Muhammed apparently claimed Gabriel and Michael as two angels who showed him Paradise and hell. he rescued Abraham from the furnace into which he had been thrown by the mighty hunter Nimrod. They say he was the “one that had escaped” (Genesis 14:13), who told Abraham that Lot had been taken captive and who protected Sarah from defilement by Abimelech. Michael prevented Isaac from sacrifice by his father by substituting a ram in his place. He saved Jacob, while yet in his mother’s womb, from death by Samael. He later prevented Laban from harming Jacob. As advocate of Israel at the time of the Exodus and destroyed Sennacherib’s army. The most famous image of Micheal shows him slaying the dragon. The Catholic Church has laid his four roles and duties quite clearly: 1. Leader of the Army of heaven’s forces in their triumph over the powers evil trying to grab us down to hell. He is the angelic model for the virtues of the ‘spiritual warrior,’ who fights the battle within. 2. He is the angel of death, carrying the souls of Christians (believers) to heaven. In this role he descends at the hour of death, and gives each soul the chance to redeem itself before passing. In this way he was seen as an enemy of the devil by blocking the should from going to hell. 3. He then weighs the souls 4. Patron and protector of the chosen people, revered by knights and military orders, defender of several towns, cities and countries. Eastern Orthodoxy loves Micheal, who is the Patron of Churches all over Russia. The Protestants recognise the four Archangels. A controversial bishop suggests Micheal was logos, while Gabriel was the Holy Spirit. Bach composed several cantatas to mark the annual feast for Saint Michael and all the Angels on Sept 29. Many Lutherans equated Michael with Jesus, an eternal angel, uncreated, eternal. This is not an uncommon view. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe Michael roles are identical to Jesus’: being the one chosen to lead God’s people and as the only one who “stands up”, identifying the two as the same spirit being. Because they identify Michael with Jesus, he is therefore considered the first and greatest of all God’s heavenly sons, God’s chief messenger, who takes the lead in vindicating God’s sovereignty, sanctifying his name, fighting the wicked forces of Satan and protecting God’s covenant people. He was the first to obey Gods order to bow before Adam. From the tears of Michael arise his angelic helpers. He is also equated with Adam, the first and best of Man; the great patriarch of the human family. Islam sees him as the one to bring Gods Providence, often through natural phenomena. He is often paired with Jebreel (Gabriel), Israeli (trumpeter angel), and Aural (the angel of death). Michael nourishes our bodies and souls, creates the universal and environmental events. The angel of mercy who doles out the good karma for deeds done.

The Prayer to Saint Micheal

“Blessed Michael, archangel,
defend us in the hour of conflict.
Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil
(may God restrain him, we humbly pray):
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God thrust Satan down to hell
and with him those other wicked spirits
who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen”

The Four Watchers Through History

As we consider these four guardians of the directions we have to take a moment to consider the western perspective of these points. At one time they marked the two Equinoxes and two Solstices. From the perspective of western astrology: Aldebaran marked the zero Aries point in 3044 BC, Antares marked zero Libra 3052 BC, Fomalhaut marked zero Capricorn, 2582 BC, Regulus marked zero Cancer 2345 BC. Of course this is non-sense, but we can say that the Grand Cross marking the seasons has shifted almost 90 degrees since these early days. This is where western astrology looses people: their signs only aligned with the actual stars in the sky for a brief moment in time. For Winter Solstice on 21 December 2023, the Sun will be in Moola Pada 2. On the Spring Equinox on 20 March 2024 the Sun will be in Uttara Bhadrapada Pada 1. Summer solstice is Jun. 21 and the Sun will be in the 4th pada of Mrigasirsha. For the Autumn equinox on Sept 23 the Sun will be in Uttara Phalguni Pada 1. This suggests that the angels are out for a walk and whatever significations we have for these great shifts over time so that today they are watching from Moola, Uttara Bhadrapada, Mrigasirsha, & Uttara Phalguni. The weakness of the Vedic Chart perspective is that we cannot say that a seasonal festival relates with a particular position of the Sun otherwise they would eventually find the harvest festival happening at the beginning of spring. Much of this gets ironed out with the Panchangam, five part calendar. Some modern astrologers like Wilhelm have sought to find some balance between the two systems. It seems they might each have their own purposes with the western chart maintaining fixed alignment with the seasons and the Vedic Chart maintaining a fixed alignment with the Stars. In both calendars there are days or months added to the calendar to keep things in sync.

Seasonal Festivals relating with the solstices and equinoxes:

Winter Solstice is celebrated through Christmas, the birth of Christ. In India they celebrate Makar Sankranti, though the festival no longer happens at the same time as the actual event. This is where we start to see the inconsistencies of the Vedic Calendar. Spring Equinox: Easter celebrates the resurrection of Christ after he died on the cross. The Egyptians have a smaller celebration for Isis as she mourns the loss of Osiris and her tears cause the rising of the Nile. Saint Patrick is not far off either. In Italy they still hold a week long Feast of Cybele. The Jews celebrate Passover, the time they fled Egypt. In India they celebrate Holi, the colour festival. King Hiranyakashipu, a demon ruler, made his subjects worship him like God. However, his own son, Prahlada, defied that order and devoted himself to the Hindu deity, Vishnu, instead. Angered by his son’s disobedience, the King and his sister Holika, hatched a plan to kill Prahlada. As decided, Holika lured Prahlada to a pyre hoping to kill him by fire. Holika protected herself with a special shroud, but Prahlada remained exposed to the flames. However, while sitting on Holika’s lap on the pyre, Prahlada prayed to Lord Vishnu who took the form of Narasimha to kill the King and Holika, while protecting Prahlada from the fire. Hence, Indian households bring in this festival of colours by focusing on the values of light, warmth, and the triumph of good over evil Summer Solstice is celebrated through John the Baptist. Summer is not typically a time of festival in India, though some area do celebrate it. Along the Ganga they celebrate this day as the day Ganga descended to earth. Modi has now Marked this day as International Yoga Day. A lesser known Navrathri, nine night celebration to Durga also happens around this time. Autumn Equinox: Harvest festivals. Thanksgiving. Michaelmas. Navrathri celebrating the nine nights of Durga is followed by Diwali is celebrated as much as a month after the actual even, but as a celebration of good over evil and light over darkness, it was probably an Equinox celebration. It’s commonly said to marks the day when Ram returned to Ayodhya, but it’s really a time to worship the local deities.
