David Eggers wrote about his father in his first successful novel, “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.” His father was a heavy smoker and drinker. When he was a child, Eggers remembers his father as an angry drunk, often chasing after his children, trying to catch them so that he could spank them. Like Eggers’s mother, his father has a minor role in the book, as he died November 1991 from stomach and lung cancer after a long illnesses.

Harrison later married O’Neal’s mother, Lucille O’Neal. Harrison saw potential in O’Neal and was a guiding force throughout his basketball career. Joseph Toney spent around six years in prison after abandoning his family. When he was out, his son and wife had moved to Germany. Toney went on for years without trying to make an effort to get back in touch with Shaq and his former wife. Later, Toney made an effort. Phillip Harrison forbade those efforts, and it remained that way until his death. Toney was later drawn into the world of drugs and turned into an addict, hurting his family in the process. Once he was out of jail, Toney reportedly tried to lead a reformed life. He became the driver of a delivery truck that would supply food and other necessities to homeless shelters. “It ain’t about what happened. Cause I’ve learned you can’t judge a man. I don’t judge. He had some problems when he was young. I don’t judge him. I don’t fault him. My thing now is just that as long as we’re both here, we just get to know each other.”

Towns Van Zandt: Father was a corporate lawyer. The family moved around several times for his fathers career when he was young. His dad bought him his first guitar. his parents began grooming him to become a lawyer or senator. In his second year of college his parents became worried about his depression and binge drinking. The enrolled him in 3 months of insulin shock therapy that destroyed most of his long term memory. His mother said she deeply regretted putting him through that. Towns was accepted into pre-law, but the airforce declined him and diagnosed him with manic depression, and that he had made minimal adjustment to life. In January 1966 his father passed away and Town’s hit the road traveling musician of the first time.
