Qualities of Purva Bhadrapada

Brahma / Creative energy: A creative energy that brings something new and fresh into the world.

Human: The rules of matching suggest that only two humans should meet and get married. In other words, a human should not marry a devi or a rakshasa.

Brahmin: Priestly educated caste. Planets in these nakshatras will seek to follow dharma, philosophy, and a humanistic path. They seek to expand themselves.

Artha: Make money and provide safety and security thru material abundance while building things that will last, grow and gain in value. Grounded and long term. They seek to restore value. The karakas of the planets will support gain of material wealth to the degree that the planetary significations both naturally and by house ownership support wealth accumulation and appreciation.

Krura/Ugra – Fierce/Severe:  A provocative placement for starting fights, arguments, litigation, quitting your job, bringing an end to things or taking care of things once and for all. Serving justice or carrying out a crime, killing things, cheating, poisoning, surgery, buying or using guns and other weapons, destroying your enemies or obstacles in a harsh way. It’s good for harvesting, tearing down the old, clearing land for development, activities that once done cannot be undone. It can be great for cutting off toxic relationships, giving up bad habits, starting a tough detox, or going into rehab, completing some act of penance like self-flagellation. Magha, P. Phalguni, P. Ashadha, P. Bhadra are the other fierce Nakshatras. Tuesdays carry this energy which is why they say not to initiate travel on this day.

Adho Mukha – Downward Facing: Relates with research, containment, underground activity, digging wells or mines, drilling for oil, digging up the garden or other trenching activities. It may also relate with shame, pessimism or low self worth that causes you to keep your eyes cast downward. Bharani, Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Vishakha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, and Purva Bhadra. Planets like Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu share this nature.

Sattvic: Tendency towards purity, harmony, truthfulness, sincerity, peacefulness. They tend to have a positive attitude and seek constructive dialogue. The activity of planets in this asterism act as an instrument of the divine.Their inspiration ultimately comes from the soul. They usually recognise that purity needs to be achieved within ourselves which somehow sets them up for a struggle between the ideal and the reality.

Vata:  Air + Ether = Cold, dry, light, moving, subtle, clear, hard, pervasive, rough. Flighty, spiritual, thin. Disturbed by bitter (Mars), astringent (Saturn), pungent (Sun). Pacified by sweet (Jupiter) & sour (Venus).

Space: Space is fully pervasive, stable, subtle, and light. Space cooperates with all the other elements; it’s provides ‘space’ for all the other elements.

Passive: Planets here will be more passive about achieving its goals: allowing things to happen rather than “forcing” things. The Moon is said to persuade thru temptation so she does well here. Venus draws us in by her promises of beauty so she also does well. Saturn is the master of patience so he also does well. The active planets can cause a bit of trouble in trying to force things that we should just allow to happen naturally.

Male: Male nakshatras are usually a little easier for males to handle. Planets placed here may show their more masculine characteristics.

West: It is likely to give results in or from the west.

Sage Vashishta

He and his wife Arundhati are an example of the closeness, intimacy and blessing that marriage brings into a couples life. Her star, Alcor, is the 7th sister who stays in the handle of the Big Dipper with her husband (a star called Mizar) instead of with her six sisters in Pleiades (the Vedic seers only recognised 6 stars in Pleiades). The star Mizar is sometimes worshiped on the Northern horizon by married women in thanks for the blessings of married life. The seven sons of Vashishta and Arundhati all became great sages themselves. Vashishta was the keeper of the wish fulfilling cow, Kamadhenu.

One of his main teachings was that we must overcome our prejudice, bigotry and stereotypes and seek to work in cooperation and harmony with our rivals. He believed there was a common spiritual core between even the worst rivals.

Sage Parashara was one of his sons, suggesting this lineage has something to do with astrology.  Vashistha Samhita is about electional astrology which is used to select favourable timing for events such as marriage or war.  Vashistha typically highlights the importance of the means we use to achieve our desired outcome.

Some of his hymns in the Rig Veda discuss family life, and much emphasis is put on his hymns extolling Indra & Varuna on equal terms. The power of Indra was needed to destroy enemies and Varuna was there to uphold social & ethical norms of society.

Vashistha also has a famous section in the Ramayana where he answers Rama’s questions about nature of life, human suffering, free will, creativity, & spiritual liberation. He is considered the Adi Guru of Vedanta Philosophy. He taught that the powers of the deities arose from within ourselves and that our fate was not determined by external gods. We must make an effort to live in harmony with nature and with others. He was devoted to righteous action and worked for the welfare of the world.

He was involved in a famous feud with a king who wanted to steal Kamadenu but he warded off all attacks by the king and his men. In a final attempt to get the cow, Vishwamitra did severe penance; however, by the end of his tapas he decided to reconcile with the sage. Vashistha teaches us to defend nature and many of those who are descendants of Vashistha find various ways to act as custodians of nature.

Male Lion

Females are only fertile for 3 – 4 days in a mating cycle. She will sleep with numerous men in that time; up to 50 copulations in 24 hours with each one lasting up to 30 minutes. This confuses the paternity so that cubs become part of the pride rather than forming family groups. In the wild, Lions only breed about once every couple of years, Male lions will also ‘mount’ other males as a way of asserting dominance. In captivity they may resort to a kind of mastabatory mating doing so almost as much as possible.

Neem — Indian Lilac

It’s a member of the mahogany family, a fast growing evergreen that does loose leaves due to the summer heat. Ity gives a nice round canopy, but the monkeys love it. The bunches of fragrant white flowers are what give it the name, ‘Indian lilac. The Persians knew it as “the free tree of India.” It’s drought resistant and can withstand very high temperatures, but it doesn’t like cold below -5C. It’s actually considered a weed in many areas, while other areas plant them around schools, government buildings, homes as a defensive measure; to bring greater security to the vulnerable. The leaves are also placed in cupboards, and storage ares to deter insects, and Hindu’s use them in several festivals. They are good ally against desertification

The tender leaf soots can be added to curry or chutney. it can be quite bitter and smells like garlic of sulphur. It can lower blood sugar, decrease libido, and ingestion should be avoid by pregnant women and children. But grin up the seeds, let them soak in water over night and spray the fields will repel insects and keep their eggs from hatching. It’s sometimes mixed with fertiliser.

Twigs and branches can be chewed for tooth and gum health, and the small quantities of oil ingested from that may have beneficial effects, but high quantiles can be quite toxic. It’s a good pesticide, insecticide, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, anti-fungus, anti-viral. The shampoo is good for dandruff or lice. The oil also gives a nice shine and decreases the frizz. In the west it’s a good pet shampoo. Forest people need not buy toothpaste.

Special Considerations

  • Pushkara amsha 24º Aquarius. Nourishing point. Moons transit brings auspicious and nourishing results. Good time to plan auspicious events.
  • Pushkara Navamsha: 23º 20′ to 26º 40′ Aquarius (Taurus Navamsha).
  • Pushkara Navamsha: 0º to 3º 20′ Pisces (Cancer Navamsha).
  • If the eclipses should fall in the lunar month of Bhādrapada, the people of Kaliṅga, of Vaṅga, of Magadha and of Saurāṣṭra, the Mlecchas, the Sauvīras, the Daradās and the Śakas will perish; pregnant women will miscarry but there will be prosperity over the land”

Lunar Month of Bhadrapada
August – September

In North India (where they follow the Purnimanta Calendar), the monsoon has come to an end, the crops are full, the calves are learning, the children playing. It’s still hot, but the heat and the water in the rivers is all on the decrease. The dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of Bhadrapada is reserved for the veneration of the dead. This period is known as Pitru Paksha. Every day they give honour to a different category of person from the past. The Vaishnava’s believe that Hrishikesh governs this month.

Krishna Janmashtami: Sometimes called Raslila, a day of play. Celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna on the 8th day of the dark fortnight (Krishna paksha). Stories, plays, music and dance to glorify Lord Krishna. After Krishna’s midnight hour birth, forms of baby Krishna are bathed and clothed, then placed in a cradle. The devotees then break their fast by sharing food and sweets. Women draw tiny footprints outside their house doors and kitchen, walking towards their house, a symbolism for Krishna’s journey into their homes.

Aja Ekadasi: This is the most beneficial Ekadashi of the year. With devoted worship nd fasting all sin of the past are eradicated. King Harishchandra had a dream where he gave everything he owned to Sage Vishwamitra.

Dahi Handi: Community event still celebrating lord Krishna. But this is a day of community fun rather than temples that come with most calendar events. On this day they hand curd from a pole and the young people have to build a human pyramid, or find some other ingenious way to get (or break) the curd pot. Just like cheek young Krishna.

Gayatri Japam: Also known as Gayatri Japa Sankalpam. This is a very auspicious day to chant Gayatri Mantra. This is especially important for those who wear the sacred thread (Brahmins). As a mantra for the Sun it’s not uncommon to recite it 108 or 1008 times morning, noon and sun set. Excellent day for anyone who wants to begin a daily practice of Gayatri.

Hartalika Teen: Celebrated the day before Ganesha Chaturthi

Ganesha Chaturthi: 10 day festival marking the birth day of Lord Ganesha. It begins on the 4th day of the month of Bhadrapada. On the first day of the festival they do a ritual to put spirit into the Idol and then pat tribute in 16 different ways. They read hymns from Ganesha Upanishad, offer sandalwood, red & yellow flowers. Ganesha is also offered Jaggary, coconut and 21 laddoo. On the last day of the festival, Ganesha Visarjan, the idol is immersed in the water to signify his journey back home to Mount Kailas.

Rishi Panchali: On the 2nd day of Ganesha Chaturthi the seven great Rishi’s a worshiped: Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadvaja, Vishvamitra, Gautama Maharishi, Jamadagni, and Vasishtha. Vasishtha’s wife Arundhati. Betel leaf, flowers, camphor, and a lamp are used for worship. It’s common for the women to fast. As the story goes, the widowed daughter of a Brahmin man was covered in ants so her parents called one of the great Rishis

Radha Ashtami: Krishna devotees celebrate Radha’s birthday 14 days after Krishna’s; the 8th day of Shukla Paksha.  Three popular mantra’s for the day are 1. Aum Vrashbahnujaye Vidmahe, Krishnapriyaye Dheemahi Tanno Radha Prachodaya and 2. Radhe Radha

Parsva Ekadasi: This is one of the best fasting days of the year. This is the day Lord Vishnu rolls over to his other side. Yudhishthira then asked him about his sleeping a rolling over. Vishnu narrates the time he took on the avatar of Vamana to win back the heavens for Lord Indra even though Bali had worshiped the Gods and honoured the Brahmins. Vishnu will sleep from Parsva Ekadasi occurring on the light part of Bhadrapada until Haribodhinii Ekadasi during the light part of the month of Karttika. Observing this Ekadasi is said to be as powerful as 1000 horse sacrifices. One typically fasts till noon and they celebrates. They do the same on the following day which is said to the when Vishnu actually mad this form, Vamadev, known.

Ganesha Visarjan: The last day of Ganesha ChaturthiA clay Idol of Ganesha is immersed in water to symbolise the immersion of the individual soul in the universal ocean. The whole festival represents the conga and going within the cycle of life. Some say that the Idol of god dissolves with time, but the essence of God remain imperishable.

Vamana Jayanti: This festival is dedicated to Vishnu’s incarnation os Vamana. The stories of Vamana are celebrated and Lord Vishnu is honoured with light, recitation of the Vishnu Sathasranam.

Mahalakshmi Vrat (vow or observance): Begins four days after Ganesha Chaturthi and continues for 16 days. All the eight forms of Mahalakshmi are worshipped. Yudhisthir asked Lord Krishna how to regain their lost kingdom and all they had lost through gambling. Lord Krishna advised them to follow the Mahalakshmi Vrat to raigain all kinds of lost wealth.

Anant Chaturdashi: Worship of Lord Vishnu in Ananta (Shesha) form on the 14th day of Sukla paksha. This will free us from our sins. See the story of Ananta below. The Jains ask forgiveness for their sin wether made intentionally or not.

Durva Ashtami: Durva grass is worshipped with flowers, fruits, rice, incense sticks, curd and other essential puja items. Shiva and Ganesha are also worshiped. It’s mainly observed by women to bring long life and prosperity for their children.

Planing the Transit: Auspicious Activities
Muhurtha – Electional Astrology

A cruel fierce nakshatra that is not good for beginning auspicious occasions.

Architectural activities, hazardous undertakings, cutting, farming business, buying buffalo, camels or other livestock, buying, making or installing water machines.

Gods & Symbols of Purva Bhadrapada

Aja Ekapada

The original Ekapada is Aja-Ekpada, “the one-footed unborn, unmanifest one,” one of the 11 Rudras from the Vedas, but he comes in three forms: Ekapada murti, Ekapada Trimurti, Ekapada Bhairava. He’s popular in Orissa where he’s connected with Jagannath, a mystical Vaishnava icon and worshiped by the Kapalika sect; the skull bearers who undertake sever tapas and penance. Most temples in South India have some version of Ekapada in it somewhere, usually carved into a pillar or support beam. He is a tantrik deity associated with Bhairava, sacrifice, the cosmic pillar of the universe; the axis mundi; the central pillar from which all else emerges.

Aja Ekapada is closely associated with Ahi Budhnya, serpent of the deep that we will explore in Uttara Bhadrapada. To some, they appear to be twin aspects of the same deity. Aja Ekapada is an aerial deity, supporter of the sky and the thundering flood. He lives in the celestial realm, rises from the east, is made of two worlds, heaven & earth. He is a special form of Agni perhaps, a single strike of lightening. This scorching pair helped Kubera guard his gold and maintain the secret societies.

Devils Advocate

Even the guilty are entitled to a defence. These folds might defend the indefensible. But it’s not just the defence of the indefinable, this is also the little devil sitting over your left shoulder giving dubious suggestions. What is it you truly desire.

Tantric Connections

Tantra Although there is much controversy over this meaning of Tantra; many scholars still insist that it represents a weaving  Vajra Thunderbolt is the original meaning, but it was since been related with the Diamond of Chitra that rises in the nights sky when the Sun is passing through this nakshatra. Vajra is connected with invincibility at cutting through Maya, illusion.

Bhairava & the Cosmic Pillar

Languages and Linguistics

Classical languages, phonetics, braille, sign language, formalist New Criticism school of literary theory. The prefix ex-, perhaps the first grunts of language being connect together. Language parsing.

The Anti-Christ

The fallen angel, the inclination towards evil, the evil suggestions that infect human minds. A malevolent entity with abhorrent qualities in dualistic opposition to God. The serpent in the garden of Eden who tempts the female away from dharma. In the Book of Revelation, Satan appears as a Great Red Dragon, who is defeated by Michael the Archangel and cast down from Heaven. He is later bound for one thousand years, but is briefly set free before being ultimately defeated and cast into the Lake of Fire.  Satan’s appearance is never described in the Bible, but, since the ninth century, he has often been shown in Christian art with horns, cloven hooves, unusually hairy legs, and a tail, often naked and holding a pitchfork. These are an amalgam of traits derived from various pagan deities, including Pan, Poseidon, and Bes. The book of Job is all about God giving Satan permission to torture job to test his faith. Pope Francis once aid that,  “The devil is intelligent, he knows more theology than all the theologians together.”

The word Satan means ‘accuser’ or ‘adversary’ and comes from the verb meaning ‘to obstruct or oppose.’ The English term devil related to the latin term for diabolical, or the greek term for a slanderer. He is also connected to Beelzebub, lord of the flies. In Arabic they have term Shaitan, which means distant or astray; but Iblis is the his Arabic name int he Quran.

House in the South

When things go south, they go wrong, things fall apart, they go down, loose value, loss of security, deteriorate, take a turn for the worst. It was often used to refer to being double crossed or cheated either by disappearing with the loot or going to the feds. In either case, shit is hitting the fan.

Cross or a Stake

Tied to a stake like a beast of burden, feudal farmers tied to the land though they don’t own is; or like a sacrificial animal. We stake our claim of things, we call it.  The cross is just as famous for execution as the stake. We saw this in full force when governments around the world were contract tracing and registering those who got the jab, the prick, the pin. We can’t leave out the stigmata or the stigma of placements here; a mark of disgrace. Vampires can only be killed by putting a stake through the heart.

A cross is also a mix of things, especially the genetic mix, mixed heritage, cross breeds. But was also use cross braces to hold things up to we can build a tower to the sky or a stairway to heaven. From this perspective, the Tower of Babble most certainly belongs here, pidgin and mixed languages, phonetics, sign language, braille, all kinds of his strange monstrosities belong here. Gossip and other blah blah bullshit. This is not a space of light and truth; it’s a space for lies, fraud, double talk, innuendo, tongue twisters, onomatopoeia. If we’re up to this kind of stuff, it’s only a matter of time before we cross the wrong person, or it might be that someone is just naturally cross. But one of the most famous crosses it the one uses in weaving, in cloth production, slowly building it up while continually reinforcing it with a crossover pattern. Rope itself is twisted or braided together to strengthen it and keep it together. Perhaps this is the power of fear, of the boogie-man whose gonna come eat you is you’re bad; the common enemy that unifies the rest. It started to make sense how this is the main partner of politics and theatre. All the main topics of mass consumption span the nakshatras of Aquarius. A lot of social science is here seeking what holds people together despite so many differences, group psychology, loss of individuality, the two sides of behaviour modification: the carrot and the stick. The stick is especially important here, perhaps the crack of a whip, the welt, the wound, the sting and perhaps event stinger, like a sliver.

The word stick reminds us that there is also so adhesive here, it makes me think that all kinds of adhesives might be here: tacks, nails, spikes, staples, glue, tape; as well as the things that are stuck together. Purva & Uttara Bhadrapadha have been called the scorching pair, it gets compared to a single ray of light, like light shining through a crack in the wall. In some sense, we can think of how uniform everything was not far back in Sravana, in Purva Bhadrapada time is making it’s distinctions, or perhaps things are being marked to distinguish them. Prices may be marked up or marked down, marked for clearance or left off the books all together. But they have something to differentiate themsleves and make them different from the rest of the herd; it’s often some mark of distinction: a fancy vest or hat everyone knows them by; something to kinda prop up their ego because on this side of the horoscope it’s pretty low. There is often something inauthentic about them, like they’er trying to be original, like they haven’t really connected to the spirit, they only know the material. Of course the karma all the way across the Saturn signs; we’re a long way away from the luminary signs: Cancer & Leo.

I used this word, ‘modification,’ not long ago, this is another good word for Purva Bhadrapada, modified, patched up, fixed and ready to go, but obviously well used, damaged goods. Body modification, tattoos, piercings, and most likely sex change surgeries to use the old fashioned term;

it’s just another step in body modification. I would think that all kinds of plastic surgeons might have placement here. It’s that devilish quetion: what do you want? What is it you desire? Like any good devil, Purva Bhadra delivers. I have talked a lot about necessity being the mother of invention here: this may be the place what our wants and our needs intersect, or are perhaps confused, mixed up somehow.

And can these people ever get mixed up in things. The pairs well with Jyeshta: Indra and his thunderbolt; the same thunderbolt that breaks open the blockage, perhaps it’s the first crack in the wall of the dam that tiniest spot of water in pada 4 that opens the floodgates of Uttara Bhadrapada. It kinda reminds me how important it is to have a good partner; in this case, a handyman, a fixer, or perhaps to have had a good architect in the beginning. The whole idea of a crux is to hold things up, like a crutch or a cane, This could suggest a co-dependent relationships, there is certainly and energy of enabling the drunk or the addict; though we may find support workers with this placement as well. Much of their behaviour might be called, a call for help; a reminder that we need others in out life.

Mark of the Beast

The mark of the beast is said to be seen on the forehead or on the right hand. There is no consensus about what this mark means, but there are many plausible possibilities:. From one perspective, these are people who have sold themselves out, they are eternally indebted to others. This is the client in the classical client patron relationship. This is the person who sold themselves out. Face tattoos in particular have been abhorred by civilised people, but tribals and nomads love this kind of thing both for the beauty of the tattoo, and as a way of marking or branding what belongs to them. Cattle in the old west were also branded; as were the Jews during the holocaust. Criminals were often marked with scars on their forehead as an example for others; this is one of the many teaching opportunities Purva Bhadra provides us with. Thieves would forfeit a hand, or in some cases they would get the cross amputation and loose their right hand and left foot. I get a sense that there’s a strong stance of and eye for an eye here to keep the karmic animosity rolling.

From another perspective we might look at these people as scarred in some way, deep traumas, perhaps a deep sense of betrayal, which is one of the most difficult emotions to get over. Of course, wherever there’s a scar, there was a wound. Perhaps this mark of the beast merely refers to pock-marks and warns people of the dangers of infectious disease. Marked for death. This might relate to a desperate escapee from the execution grounds; the one who managed to escape catastrophe.

We might also see in this a certain level of defacement, perhaps even depreciation; after all, it is marked, dinged, scared. The Great stone carver, Michelangelo has placements her, they mark left by the hammer and chisel.

Number of the Beast — Iron Maiden

Woe to you, oh earth and sea
For the Devil sends the beast with wrath
Because he knows the time is short
Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast
For it is a human number
Its number is six hundred and sixty-six
I left alone, my mind was blank
I needed time to think
To get the memories from my mind
What did I see? Can I believe?
That what I saw that night was real and not just fantasy?Just what I saw in my old dreams
Were they reflections of my warped mind staring back at me? ‘Cause in my dreams it’s always there

The evil face that twists my mind and brings me to despair
Night was black, was no use holding back
‘Cause I just had to see, was someone watching me?
In the mist, dark figures move and twist
Was all this for real or just some kind of Hell?

Six six six, the number of the beast
Hell and fire was spawned to be released
Torches blazed and sacred chants were praised
As they start to cry, hands held to the sky
In the night, the fires are burning bright
The ritual has begun, Satan’s work is done
Six six six, the number of the beast
Sacrifice is going on tonight
This can’t go on, I must inform the law
Can this still be real, or just some crazy dream?
But I feel drawn towards the chanting hordes
Seem to mesmerize, can’t avoid their eyes
Six six six, the number of the beast
Six six six, the one for you and me
I’m coming back, I will return
And I’ll possess your body and I’ll make you burn
I have the fire, I have the force
I have the power to make my evil take its course

Naughty, naught, nothing.

This is the one with nothing to loose; as opposed to the king who has everything. It took on a more specific relation to sexual promiscuity, but in a general sense, it relates to being disobedient, showing poor conduct, mischievousness; evil, immoral, corrupt.

In Hindi and Greek, ‘a-‘ is a prefix meaning ‘not;’ as in ‘ahimsa:’ without violence. It relates with being away from someone, the opposite of something; everything that is not ‘that.’  This is what makes Purva Bhadrapada so hard for us to pin down, because it’s simple not this or not that; but in and of itself, it’s nothing in particular. They are often defined by what they are not.  Kinda like the zero, which is a placeholder that leave zero. In old Chinese they used the prefix ma. I get a sense that all of this relates with a babies first words: waaaa, aaaa, ah, & ma. These are all have the same basic meaning that “I am in need of something” “I am empty.” I am lacking in something and need something from outside. In the language of grammar, ‘a -‘ is often a prohibitive participle, meaning, it doesn’t say anything in particular, it creates an imperative mood, a command that must be obeyed; perhaps the tone itself gets us closer to the truth. A good many people with this placement work with language, phonetics. ‘A -‘ is an interesting word in the English language as well. It refers to all things of a type, but no one thing in particular. Pure Bhardapada connects the all, with the nothing. They can take these kinds of all or nothing  risks too, they are big on gambling and risk; they often have nothing left to loose.

The ‘a’ serves another important function in sanskrit. It empowers the consonants, especially the hard consonants that cannot be pronounced without a vowel. A ‘k’ by itself makes no sound, it’s invisible, but when you add vowel, most particularly an ‘a,’ suddenly the K makes a sound and most of us have forgotten there is even an ‘a’ and the sound for ‘k’: ‘kay.’

The prefix ‘Ex-‘ means, ‘to be out of,’ ‘away from,’ ’without,’ ‘deprived of,’ ‘upwards,’ ‘completely.’ This is a very popular prefix in the English language and it’s often reduced to an ‘e’ or an ‘a’ alone. The word, ‘afraid,’ literally means, ‘without peace.” But it also means ‘former’  from Latin ex “out of, from within; from which time, since; according to; in regard to.”

If we come back to the Chinese expression relates with indo-greco ‘a-‘ or ‘ex-‘, we find ‘ma-,’ ‘mu-’ or ‘wu-.’ There’s an interesting history to the graphic for ‘wu’ in Chinese script. The graphic was originally meant ‘dance, dancer.’ This graphic now means ‘not, without.’ To distinguish the old word for ‘dancer’ from the new word for ‘not’ the added the ‘radical character #136: opposite feet, ‘opposed to.’ The character for this is made with six strokes, which, in my feverish astrological mind might then connect us with 666, the number of the beast.  That the Chinese’s script has 214 radicals in their script might also lead down an interesting avenue, but that may have to wait for another lifetime. ‘Mu-‘ is called “the gate to enlightenment” by the Chinese. The Japanese related it with the idea “resolve to attain enlightenment.” The Zen Koans point out the knots in our mind that can either bind us or free us. A student asked his guru, “Does a dog have buddha nature, or not?” The Guru replied, “Not!”

In Robert M. Pirsig’s novel Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, a classic novel on Zen, ‘mu’ is translated as ‘no thing,’ he related it with the unasked the question. He described it this way: “For example, it’s stated over and over again that computer circuits exhibit only two states, a voltage for “one” and a voltage for “zero.” That’s silly! Any computer-electronics technician knows otherwise. Try to find a voltage representing one or zero when the power is off! The circuits are in a mu state.” This novel opens with him pointing out a red-winged black bird to his bored teenage son. It’s a kind of joke that is often repeated. It that part of North America he might as well have been pointing out a blade of grass; they are so plentiful that there is no need to point one out, just open your eyes and you will see one. It’s nothing to see.

Mu is further related to symbolic logic and mathematics as a response to a question that cannot be answered, such as the infamous loaded question: “Have you stopped beating your wife?” The only answer you can give is silence, or perhaps in in particular grunt or sigh of exasperation. We could connect Purva Bhardapada with all the little grunts and sighs we give off in normal parlance. As someone is speaking, we make little sounds to let them know we are still listening, keep filling the cup. Or the sigh that breaks the silence between a stony couple.

This is were the question of evil comes in: is god is so perfect, why did he make everything so broken, so evil, so wrong. If it’s all in his image, then god too is imperfect. A good hindu might point out that all the devas and asuras have karmas to deal with, none of them are perfect either. Perfection is beyond the imagination with is where Purva Bhadrapada takes us, it’s through this energy that we start to disconnect with reality and embrace populist philosophy: if everyone is doing it, then it’s ok. They stray from truth and justice and everything that of good and holy in this world. The problem is that everyone sins, this does not mean it ok.

This is belief in it’s infancy, coming from the one who knows nothing, from someone lost in the forest and happens upon a path, but it’s the path of Hansel & Greatle who follow only their most craven desires for sweets and end up at the old witches gingerbread house being eaten. ‘Too good to be true’ would be a good maxim for Purve Bhadra natives to keep in mind. Reading between the lines in common here. By now we’ve already looked at a few nakshatra’s that point us to the space between things. I get a sense that Shatabhisha is truly nothing, but Purva Bhadrapada is like nothing alerting itself, making itself known. From nothing, there is now something.  These are the paradoxes we have to deal with here. Peaches Geldof was one such paradox. She died from a heroin overdose just like her mother. She was a total party girl; the very definition of girls gone wild. But she also studied philosophy and theology, and dabbled in a few cult like religions. And there is probably much more to the story of her death, and to her mother’s death. The point is that it can be really hard to judge a book by it’s cover when Purva Bhadrapada is involved.

Paradox

A logically self-contradictory statement or a statement that runs contrary to one’s expectation, perhaps contrary to our senses, or to hope everything thing seems; yet it is true. The great paradoxes of life: Time is an illusion. This world, this only world we have ever known: it’s not real either. These are truths that defy logic, that defy the appearance of things.

Famous paradox: If a ship, being continually repaired over time, eventually has every single part replaced, can it still be said to be the same ship? And, why is it more tiring to sat around doing nothing than it is to be active. Paradoxes are often found in self reference, infinite regress, circular logic, loaded questions, half-truths, hasty assumptions.  Can you wish to a genie that wishes don’t come true? In a race, the quickest runner can never overtake

Animalia Paradoxa

a list of wild and fantastic creatures that were reported from around the world; creates that were so full of contradiction that they couldn’t possibly exist; like the Pegasus, the unicorn, or pigs flying; it makes us question what is real. The Rana-Piscis was reported to be a type of frog-fish, but it turned out to be a frog in a stage even before the tadpole. And this is essentially the stage of evolution we are at in Purva Bhadrapada. The earliest signs of life. Another classification that is also obsolete was the Plagiuri type fish or lizard whose tails were flat hoizontoly so that they coat force by moving vertically. The creatures that have been found to have this have since been classified as mammals, like whales. Of course I’ve always found it a little odd that whales are mammals. Another creature on this list that opens unique possibilities for this nakshatra was a type of pelican that would feed it’s young with it’s own blood; which makes me wonder if there isn’t some Chinamasta connection to this. From a practical perspective, there is much connecting creatures of the air, land and water: frogs, waterfowl. The Satyrus: Linnaeus described “with a tail, hairy, bearded, with a manlike body, gesticulating much, very fallacious, is a species of monkey, if ever one has been seen.” This in itself is an apt description of Purva Bhadrapada natives. The mysterious Scythian Lamb turned out to be an allegorical description of an embryo, and not a lamb which grew from a plant attaches to an umbilical cord. The Phoenix rising from the ashes, a pyre of aromatic plants. There is said to be only one lonely phone in the whole world. If Adam was the first man, this is the last man standing. The one who pulls themselves from the rubble to find nothing left. The dragon also make this list, the winged, fire-breathing lizard. The manticore, siren’s made the list, as did the antelope and llama.

Dragons: Vitra, leviathan, the grand-soul, the big maw, python, radon, wyvern, fafnir, zahhak. They are the monsters lurking in the shadows, the devilish voice that tells us to do wrong. The dragon is vitra, the one who stands opposed to life by blocking the rain and unbalancing the natural rhythms. Interestingly enough there is a Zostarin dragon named Dhaka with ten heads full of sin and evil counsel. One of Rani’s more significant poems was about doing battle with Masnav, the dragon of sensual pleasure.

Chaos Theory

Butterfly effect. Chaos theory states that within the apparent randomness of chaotic complex systems, there are underlying patterns, interconnection, constant feedback loops, repetition, self-similarity, fractals and self-organization. Chaos means that the present might determine the future, but this dose not mean that an approximate present will bring an approximately similar  future. The future is likely to become more wildly different as time goes on. Any tiny change, and the whole universe collapses. “…whatever we do affects everything and everyone else, if even in the tiniest way. Why, when a housefly flaps his wings, a breeze goes round the world.” Chaos pendulum; double rod pendulum: You gotta watch a video of one of these in action. While I’m discussing theories that I know nothing about, I can also mention that a lattice is a concept of group theory, geometry and mathematics. A lattice is a discrete but infinite regular arrangement of points (lattice sites) in a vector space. Numbers theory, lie algebras, coding all relate with Purva Bhadrapada for any of those with the capacity to understand these concepts. False modesty also comes out of Purva Bhadrapada, the guru who says he knows nothing is the one everyone knows knows something. Purva Bhadrapada natives use such tricks all the time, they always seem to mean the opposite of what they say. This is the space where yes mean no, and black means white, where 2 + 2 does = 5. Just ask Plato. The errors we make due to rounding of in mathematic, or in counting someone out. When we talk of everything, we negate the individuality of each thing. Another phenomena that relates very much with Purva Bhadrapada is the hook effect. We see this with antibody resistance, it works up to a certain point, and then it’s effectiveness falls of. In Shatabhisha I talked about coming to the final curve, The curve has good rounded here and we’re heading in the other direction now.

Betrayal

Betrayal is a double negative, both parties loose: The person betrayed is pissed off, and the one who did it inevitably feels some guilt and shame for being such a jerk.

how unwilling each partner was to sacrifice for the other and the relationship. Some types of betrayal in romantic relationships include sexual infidelity, conditional commitment, a nonsexual affair, lying, forming a coalition against the partner, absenteeism or coldness, withdrawal of sexual interest, disrespect, unfairness, selfishness, and breaking promises.

Crucifiction

And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, where executions and beheadings took place which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. legend is that Shem and Melchizedek retrieved the body of Adam from the resting place of Noah’s ark on Mount Ararat and were led by angels to Golgotha, a skull-shaped hill at the center of the earth where Adam had previously crushed the serpent’s head following the Fall of Man. On the left hand is the little hill of Golgotha where the Lord was crucified. About a stone’s throw from thence is a vault [crypta] wherein his body was laid, and rose again on the third day. There, at present, by the command of the Emperor Constantine, has been built a basilica; that is to say, a church of wondrous beauty

Crossed swords

A symbol used by knights and cavalry, helicopter squadrons.

The Establishment

Establishment: settled arrangment;  social matrix of ruling people and institutions. Establish: cause to stand still, to stipulate, set up, erect, build.

Chimera

The literal translation of Chimera is “she-goat.”  Greek myth describes the Chimera as a fire breathing beast; A lion with cloven hooves and a set of wings with goat and dragon heads on either side of the lion’s head. Her parents were Typhon & Echidna, connecting them with Uttara Bhadrapada and Ashlesha. She is brothers with Ceberus from Bharani, the Lemiain? Lion of Magha. Genetics describes this as a fusion of genetically distinct DNA.

Health: Sides of the body (ribs), soles of the feet & left thigh

This signification of being the soles of the feet is the lowest and dirties part of the body. In India, it’s forbidden to point he soles of your feet at anything you respect.

  • Swelling of feet and ankles
  • Heart problems, paralytic attack, blood circulation
  • Enlarged liver, diabetes
  • Ulcers, sides of legs, rib trouble

Stars of Purva Bhadrapada

Two stars in the body of Pegasus: Alpha Pegasi (Markab) & Beta Pegasi (Scheat). Both  stars  were seen to have a blend of Mars & Mercury and were considered true “black malefics” brings injury and imprisonment.

False Cross, near the Southern cross.

Pegasus

The flying horse is auspicious for horsemen and calvary. Ambition, vanity, entusians, caprice, and bad judgement. The wings, connect pegasus to to birds and angels, all of which are said to be an allegory for a higher spiritual power that the hero sought to help him in his quest. The god who carries us through life when we attain higher consciousness.

Relates with ships, the ocean, changes in the weather, drowning, catastrophes, earthquakes, tsunamis. Falling from a horse or from a height, science, invention, heroism.

After Perseus chopped off Medusa’s head the blood poured from her neck mixed with some sea foam from which Pegasus sprung forth. (We should note that Indra used sea foam to defeat Vritra.) Provides the belief that one can fly over everything. It can make a person arrogant and proud, believing they are superior to others. They will likely face much deception and back-biting in life.

Alpha Pegasi (Markab)

Markab is an Arabic word meaning,“the saddle of the horse,” a star on the shoulder of pegasus. The Chinese relate these stars with an “encampment.” This is often seen as a ship, but the saddle represents all kinds of land of air transport. They’ve seen it all. This can lead to a quiet, humble, unassuming Master; or, a loud and pathetic pretender. It rules of the centre of ball of the right foot. They Hebrew word for this star means, returning from afar.

With malefics, it brings dangers from fire, weapons or explosions. Auspicious placements gives mental, spiritual and intellectual alertness. Good with numbers and communication.

Uranus conjunct Markab: “Evil habits, mental disturbances, clever, wanderer, unavailing efforts, a peculiar life, trouble with the parent of the opposite sex and domestic matters, many accidents, violent death. [1] Dangers from fire, weapons or explosions. [3] This causes slight spasms through the feet that can be considered nerve disorders for the most part. Rubbing the feet often would be a good habit with any type of oil, and soaking them in warm water with a small amount of baking soda. Drinking a half glass of warm milk in the morning will literally heal the nerves and should be made a daily ritual.”

Neptune conjunct Markab: “Unbalanced or abnormal mind, many disappointments, emotional, romantic, distasteful environment, secret enemies, domestic disharmony, many accidents, violent death early in life. Neptune was last conjunct Markab in 1857 and 1858. The average life expectancy in Europe and North America then was 34 years of age. Everyone in the list below was born then, except for Philip II of Spain, born in the previous conjunction in 1527. This disproves Robson’s interpretation of “violent death in early life.”

Beta Pegasi (Scheat)

On the leg of Pegasus. Orange-red hue. The name comes from Arabic, Al Sā’id “the upper arm.” It’s has the energy of Saturn Mars Mercury. It sound slightly less auspicious than Markab. Rules the centre of the ball of the left foot.

Astrology King Uranus conjunct Scheat: “Deceitful, vacillating, little concentration, psychic, unreliable, involved in difficulties due to own acts, many accidents, death through drowning or by water, especially if in 1st, 6th, 8th or 10th houses. The danger of death in catastrophes such as floods, shipwrecks, mining accidents, airplane accidents, or maybe by suicide. (No orb): “This causes slight spams through the feet that can be considered nerve disorders for the most part. Rubbing the feet often would be a good habit with any type of oil, and soaking them in warm water with a small amount of baking soda. Drinking a half glass of warm milk in the morning will literally heal the nerves and should be made a daily ritual.”

Astrology King Neptune conjunct Scheat: “Prominent in inventive, occult or psychic matters, persecuted, peculiar domestic conditions, many accidents, danger of drowning. The danger of death in catastrophes such as floods, shipwrecks, mining accidents, airplane accidents, or maybe by suicide.”

Astrology King Pluto conjunct Scheat: “Danger of death in catastrophes such as floods, shipwrecks, mining accidents, airplane accidents, or maybe by suicide. (No orb): This position causes the person to have a self-destructive attitude. This is similar to Mercury conjunct Mars at this point, but the self-destructive tendencies are much greater in that they force others to dislike them. They carry out their own self-undoing through various means, like cutting themselves purposely; they burn themselves or commit suicide by jumping in front of a car or train. By doing these things, they feel they are hurting another individual in their life. They have a severe martyr complex to the point of self-destruction. This is an emotional disorder in that they feel they are harming others by harming themselves. No help can be given to these natives as they have set out to do these things in their incarnation. This configuration will occur again when the next age is on the scene. It will not be as powerful at that time as it has been in this age. There will be incarnations by those from this age who have chosen this configuration to experience these things; however, in the next age, others will simply ignore these self-destructive tendencies. In the coming Age of Aquarius, if they wish to injure or destroy themselves, others will pay little attention. The elevation of the minds of people in this new age will allow them to pay scant attention to those who wish to destroy themselves. They would feel that it would be better to rid themselves of such a person rather than become emotional over the self-inflicted injuries or destruction they have brought upon themselves.”

Astrology King Water and Storms: “The last time Uranus was on Scheat, the costliest hurricane in history hit America. On September 18, 1926, the Great Miami Hurricane killed over 370 people and left 50,000 homeless. In today’s terms, it cost $157 billion, compared to $99 billion for Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Uranus was conjunct Scheat by 45′. There were no aspects to Uranus as there will be this year. The last time Saturn was on Scheat, a ferry sank off Haiti on 01 April 1996, killing over 200 people. On 08 June 1996, an F5 tornado killed 16 people and caused $100 million in damages in Topeka, Kansas.”

Astrology King Air Accidents: “The last time Uranus was on Scheat: The first African American to hold a pilot’s license, Bessie Coleman, died after falling 2,000 feet from her airplane on 30 April 1926. On 10 May 1926, two pilots parachuted to safety after their planes collided mid-air at Langley Field, Virginia. The last time Saturn was on Scheat: 03 April 1996, USAF CT-43 crashed in Croatia, killing all 35 onboard, including US Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown. 08 June 1996, an XB-70 Valkyrie and an F-104 Starfighter collided mid-air killing both pilots in Barstow, California. July 28, 1996, the US announced that a Lockheed U-2 spy plane had disappeared over Cuba. On August 6, 1996, Braniff Airlines Flight 250 crashed in Fall City, Nebraska, killing all 42 onboard.”

Astrology King Strikes: “The last time Uranus was on Scheat: 03 May 1926, the British general strike in support of coal miners started. Over 1.5 million workers walked out, which led to the government declaring martial law. 19 February 1927, another general strike, this time in Shanghai, protesting the presence of British troops. The last time Saturn was on Scheat: 17 June 1996, Air France workers walked out on strike. 29 June 1996, a sailor’s strike ended in the UK. These last two tie in the “air” and “water” themes of Scheat so well.”

(Algenib)

This star is not typically counted as a part of Purva Bhadrapada, but is considered among the three main stars of Pegasus

Key Themes

The apologies and sorries coming from Shatabhisha come to an end here. These folks tend to be unapologetic. Shatabhisha struggled with the truth, Purva Bhadrapada turn it on its head. This where we turn things over to look at them from the other side. In Shatabhisha there is judgement and condemnation, but in Purva Bhadrapada the accused becomes the judge. The question of execution becomes important here. We execute a murderer and become murderers ourselves. In some sense, we might think of Shatabhisha as nothing, the lowest rung. Purva Bhadrapada is what arises out of nothing. If we are feeling sorry for ourselves in Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapha asks, “What are you going to do about it?”

Orwells double speak: Anti-Facists act like facists. Anti-racist are racist, the department of truth is a department of lies, the defence department is an aggressive machine of war. We meet with many popular literary devices like irony, dilemma, hypocrisy, betrayal, fraud, the wolf in sheep’s clothing, split personalities, bipolar, gas lighting, and all kinds of tricks.

In many ways, this is the deep state, the hidden support of society. There have been arguments that the economics of crime is really what keeps everything going: greed is the engine of the economy. Classically, the 11th house is considered a sin house, but what people want more than anything is money, gain, their desires fulfilled. Purva Bhadrapada is full of double standards, double-crossing, turning things around and occasionally, just being contrary, providing the opposing view, or being the nay-sayer

The Rothschild’s invented double entry book-keeping to track income and expenses so they could track money and reduce fraud. But it’s leaves one important column without comment: off the books. These natives do well with economic and business generally: flipping real-estate, turning things over, turning tricks, hawking things and making blood money or using slave labour. Speaking of both slave Labour and economics, I suspect the number zero and the whole philosophy of nothing has some relation here.

One the other hand, this is where the final judgement is taking place, the final score; but somehow these people are the biggest looses; they certainly aren’t cool or creative or original like the Leo folks on the other side of the aisle. These people have nothing to go on, but they are masters of making a mountain from a molehill. They can easily take the smallest thing and make it into something huge.

There is a sense here of the immanence, the pressing urgent of the moment. Necessity is said to be the mother of invention. This gives them some farmer creativity. Whatever needs to be done. Is said with the menacing tone of a Hollywood thriller. Truth is Leo it’s transcendent, beyond time, Purva Bhadrapada we are down here always pressed for time, racing the clock, dealing with the here and now.

In the old days, this was the client of the patron-client relationship. This is the relationship that was the pillar of society. And these people can e a pillar of the community type; this is why their secrets become so important to them. They have to keep face so they can hood the truth. This is the crutch, the ones who hold the king up. This is the friend we can lean on when we’re not strong, but also the one who leans on others as a way of exerting a shady kind of influence. They are usually trying to do right, but they often don’t have a clue; they are really just taking their first steps towards truth. This probably makes them even more volatile. They are often enemies of the environment, it’s the very definition of impure, mixed, cross bred. Air and water pollution, anyone dealign with the scull and crossbones chemicals. They do well in the sciences generally. They are very good at finding and exploiting weakness.

They are like outcaste brahmins: Working with flesh, death, surgery, forbidden practices, cremation grounds or funeral directors, cemetery or execution grounds, modern doctors, pharmacists. People who have their own jargon. The executioner, those who support the establishment like Police and Military. The dark side of theatre and politics, of Hollywood, of life in general: pornography, violence, horror, science fiction, black magic, voodoo, self mortification, self mutilation, Aghore. They often seem idealistic or even romantic, often putting others on a pedestal or becoming star struck. They are very natural partners with Uttara Bhadrapada natives, and Mrigashirsa is also good. Neither of the Bhadrapada’s get along with Jyeshta.

This seems like a very dark nakshatra, and it is, but the process of individualisation starts   here; the first step back to the light. Just like our first step in life, we needed some support, a crutch. And there’s a kind of freedom that spiritualist see as the devil, the dark and diabolical freedom of anything being possible down here on this plane of earth, once this dilutes into the dream plane of pisces it’s not so bad, but the Aquarius bhadrapada knows what sells, knows what people want and caters to that. It’s a little bit of the dark side of capitalism. I jest give the people what they want. This attitude can be good for service and good for business.
