Transit Summary

Nuclear Energy: In 1998 India & Pakistan traded numerous nuclear test back and forth. This is a good example of the kind of division caused by this Saturn. Though they are one; they think they are two.  IN 1968 we have France doing their first test of the Hydrogen bomb right after the Nuclear non-proliferation treaty is signed. In 1939, at the onset of WW II, Einstein sent a letter to Roosevelt advising on applications of fission; he had a meeting by the end of the month. In 1909/10 Rutherford published his model of the atom and Superconductivity  was discovered.

Transport: Edison tested the first Electric train. A famous cargo ship for the railway began it’s maiden voyage from India to North America. The International Space Station was launched. In 1970, Richard Branson founded Virgin Group as a discount mail-order record retailer.

Technology: Google was released in 1998.  In 1969/70 quarks were discovered, Intel created SRAM and the first ARPANET message was sent. String Theory was the big theory, winning the Nobel prize in ’69; though scientists still can’t explain how two incompatible theories can both be 100% true; this is why we study Shaiviam. In 1939 the first public TV broadcasts went on air, by the end of the year the world (the few people who have TVs) will see their first televised baseball game; nylon and air-conditioning were just being invented. The New York World fair used the slogan “Dawn of a New Day”. The Zeppelin was invented in 1909/10 along with neon lighting and infrared photography.  The airplane was undergoing many changes to be adapted for military use, commercial air freight, to be used from a boat at sea. Just 20 years earlier, in 1880, Thomas Edison was testing the first electric railway.

Music, Art, Literature: Samuel Becket won the Nobel Prize for Literature. His most famous work, “Waiting for Godot” exemplifies the kind of pessimism that comes with this placement: just waiting for death. The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” is all about taking a bad situation and making it better. The band itself was in turmoil. John Lennon married Yoko Ono to become the odd-couple.  Anti-war protests were all the rage. The song ends with a long refrain of Na-na-na-na…. “Shakespeare in Love.” I think culture was a little higher in 1939 when the Wizard of Oz was released, ‘The Three Stooges’ did “You Nazi Spy!’”.that year; four year old Dalai Lama was also declared the Dalai Lama.  In 1909/10 the first girl guides group was formed; this was about the same time that a group of explorers went to the Antarctica.

Economy: The price of oil is mostly low, but may hit its lowest point here and then start going up. This might suggest that production hits a peak and is therefore reduced in order to help the price go back up. We know that Saturn in Aries reduces energy resources. In 1998, just when oil prices start going up the DOW Jones hits a record high. This suggests a kind of Inverse Relationship between industry and oil prices. Industrial mobilisation for the war in 1939 effectively ended years long world wide depression, but many countries will see food rationed during the war. Oil prices were slightly lower in this period than they were for five years on either side.

The European Central Bank & European Monetary Institute are founded to begin managing the European economy and the introduction of the Euro. But there is a problem with the first coins that are minted and they have to be redone,  Russia and Korea had a financial crisis. Russia is forced to devalue the Ruble.

In 1880, the first cash register was patented. In 1998, PayPal was started by Elon Musk.

Mergers: 1998 was the year of big oil mergers. 1880 Bartum & Bailey Circus’ merge. 1939: Germany & Italy make the Pact of Steel. WW II began in 1939 when Germany attacked Poland after a long period of appeasement. Pakistan was also starting to push for more independence. In the previous transit the more generally Indian Independence movement had just started to get violent.

Health: DiGeorge syndrome, STEM cells, 1969: HIV, artificial heart, viruses & viral diseases, The last execution by guillotine happened in France. Women were given the vote in Norway after a female activist ran in front of the Kings horse during a race. .

Oct. 18, 1851: “Moby Dick” first published. This has much to say about industrial whaling.
Jul. 9 1762: Catherine the Great’s reign begins.
Jun. 15, 1762: Austria issues the first paper currency. Two weeks later is the first reported counterfeit.
Feb. 8, 1587: Queen “Bloody Mary” of Scotland is executed by botched beheading in Oundle, United Kingdom following her trial. Queen Elizabeth I takes power ushering a period of liberalism and stability.
1202: Hindu-Arabic Numbering System introduced to the west.
