2017-18 Transit predictions for Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces

Sagittarius

Sagittarius natives will have Saturn transiting their first house, this is well known to age a person, or, at least, make them appear older as they struggle with life’s responsibilities. Saturn in the first house while speed up the aging process of the body while causing delay in most other areas. You could find yourself having to take responsibility for younger siblings, marriage or business partners, and job. Saturn’s aspect on the 10th house can bring greater responsibility and more work hours (possibly unpaid overtime) in the career. Ketu is also aspecting the 10th house suggesting that work can be scattered and inconsistent; one should also be wary of any improper activity that could mar one’s reputation in society during this period. Saturn’s aspect to the 7th house can delay the signing of new contracts while giving durability to those contracts and deals which are already in place. From a relationship[p point of view, this Saturn will be better for those who are already married rather than those seeking a marriage relationship. Ketu in the second house can be a detriment to savings and the family assets. The owner of the second house in the first house (12th from 2nd) also suggests that you may be separated from your family or suffer the loss of a family member. Ketu is also aspecting the 6th house which can disperse and dispense with enemies and obstacles. This Ketu can also lead you into some kind of unusual work (unusual for you that is, but perhaps a common job by society standards. Rahu is in the 8th house, which can bring a sense of wandering whether the wandering is physical travel overseas, or perhaps merely emotional and/or intellectual wandering (this will depend on the significations of ones own natal chart). In any case, this wandering by Rahu is very likely to wander some occult, mysticism or astrology. This Rahu also aspects the 12th house which can be good for meditation and/or travel; some kind of isolating activity in any case. Rahu in Cancer aspecting the 4th house can bring a sense of hyper vigilance, misplaced defensiveness, and and emotional roller-coaster in general. Jupiter is giving his blessing your profits and gains which are likely to diversify as you find more sources. Guru is also very well placed for expanding your friends circle; friends and especially older brothers can do very well in this period, though they are also likely to face some obstacles. This is a great period to display you most noble qualities as you expand your efforts to get what you want in life while following the path of righteousness. This Jupiter c an also be very good for connecting with others, business owners, contract makers (or maintainers) and people of the opposite sex.

Capricorn

Ketu is in the 1str house for Capricorn natives. This Ketu can make a person feel a little scattered which is not likely to be beneficial for students or those who’s work involved productivity. In a creative aspect, this can be an interesting and potentially ground-breaking period as new ideas and potentially new talents are unleashed. This period may also be marked by a change in spiritual beliefs and practices that is likely to have roots in your past life. Capricorn parents could face some difficulties with their children in this period as the unexpected arises. Rahu is in the 7th house which can make it a little difficult to connect with your spouse as they become more defensive than usual. It’s possible that this period could bring some misplaced jealousy on your part, so be careful that this does not overtly affect your relationship. Rahu in the 7th house is likely to bring new contracts, connections and partners into your life (or at least, most certainly, a strong desire for such connections. This Rahu can, however, be very materialistic as is glosses over this image of things without looking too deeply into the heart of the matter (or the person); therefore, connections which are begun in this period can also be lost again before Rahu moves into Gemini. You may also find yourself seeking greater gain or profit thru the influence of Rahu. You might find that your efforts flow from an insatiable hunger in this time. Jupiter is in the 10th house which, like like Saturn in the 10th house, can bring more work and more responsibility, but in Jupiter’s the income and respect is also likely to increase proportionally. You might find people relying one you for advice. This can be a good time for increased savings, as well as diversifying ones valued collections. The family can prosper in this time, but so too can ones enemies and obstacles, though you are sure to receive good advice or some kind of good luck that will help you to overcome both obstacles and enemies. Saturn is in the 12th house suggesting that you are likely to pinch your pennies thru this transit. Saturn in the 12 reduces expenditure as well as disturbing ones sleep and other pleasures of the bed. The combination of both Saturn and Jupiter aspecting the 2nd house can be very good for savings and as the responsible attitude in spending will match that of saving. This Saturn Jupiter combination aspecting the 6th house can cause problems over time as healing and seeking help could be delayed. But as I said, Jupiter will offer blessing in this area of life. Saturn is also aspecting your 9th house which can be excellent for developing some kind of experiential personal beliefs. This can also make one quite obstinate and stubborn in following orthodox or outdated beliefs. I don not expect this to be a period of fast luck. Some call this kind of luck, “hard luck.” Luck is not missing, nor is bad, just a bit slow and hard.

Aquarius

Aquarius natives have Rahu transiting their 6th house bring a strong sense of urgency for overcoming enemies and obstacles. You may be seeking a second job or more hours at work to do this. Some “creative” resume building could be used for such ends, but what is given by Rahu is often taken away due to the unsustainable means of attainment. Jupiter is very well placed in the 9th house: Luck, education and a higher understanding of this world and your place in it will all find expansive expression in this period. Jupiter’s aspect to the first house can be good for health and may even add a bit of protective fat to the body. One might, however, find oneself sorting thru a variety of doctrines which can be overwhelming sometimes. This can also be a good time for ones father or guru, father, children and students as Jupiter will offer his benevolence and expansiveness to each of these areas of life. Saturn will be in the 11th house bringing his sense of delay to your profits. This can be a good position for wage earners as Saturn is suggestive of a certain regularity of income. One the other hand, if you are conduction your own business or are seeking other methods of gain, this Saturn can delay payment for work completed. Saturn and Jupiter both aspecting your 1st house can bring greater dignity and respect to your personality and this can also be good for health. Saturn’s aspect to your 8th house can, however, delay personal change and growth while also bring your focus to you responsibilities for your children and/or ongoing creative endeavours.

Pisces

Rahu is in the 5th house, which can bring a strong desire for children and one can be quite ruthless in this pursuit. Spiritual practices and creative endeavours can also find expression in this period, though you are very likely to go at these things on your own, or in your own way. Rahu’s aspect to the 9th house can bring a strong sense of independence in ones beliefs and you are likely to have no qualms about following your own path regardless of the consequences. Jupiter is in the 8th house which can be good for education as well as for obtaining some kind of confidential information or secret knowledge. You could also see an expansion of the home base as well as an increase in numbers of people living in the home. Jupiter’s aspect to the 12 house can be excellent of meditation, divination, ashram life, education spending, sleep, and other activities that are conducted in isolation; including bed pleasures. And since this Jupiter is aspecting the 2nd house as well as the 12th house, this period becomes a good opportunity for the purchase of big ticket home furnishings, assets that will build on the family prosperity, of other collections. Saturn is happy in the 10th house, bringing greater responsibility in to your career and public reputation. The 10th house is a house of our good works in society (karma bhava) and Saturn loves to work and take responsibility. Ketu is dispersing your profits as well as friendships, so look for changes in these areas. Long term prosperity is well fortified in this period so I don’t expect the dimished profits to be very disruptive in your life. Saturn will limit expenses to some degree (or perhaps he will merely draw out the expenses in a payment plan.

2017 -2018 Transit predictions for Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio: Saturn in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Libra, Rahu in Cancer & Ketu in Capricorn

img_0196.jpg

Leo

For Leo natives, Jupiter is giving his blessing to the Kama (desire) trine which can act as a multiplier, so desire could be strong in this period; though since it’s the Guru who giving his dristi to this trine, you are likely to conduct yourself honourably; due to which there is a very good chance of enlarging your fiends circle as well as you access to distributive networks. It could be good time for academics seeking publication or for crafts people who do work with their hands and those seeking job specific certifications. This could be a good period for Leo natives to gain from their relationships, negotiation settings or contracts, though Saturn in the 5th house will give strong resistance to risk taking (or ego based) behaviours. However, such caution could also be rewarded romantically or otherwise. Saturn is also giving his aspect to the houses of wealth (the 11th and 2nd) which can be restrictive due to ones deeper sense of responsibility to children, students, or ongoing creative outlets. The combined aspects of Saturn and ketu the the 2nd house can be both restrictive and dispursive bringing difficulty to ones savings, collections and even family values. However, it should also be noted that Ketu is generally does very good work for us in the 6th house. Debt could be eliminated and enemies and obstacles dispursed in a relatively painless way. Ketu in the 6th house occasionally signifies bankruptcy as well as new age healing techniques that could also be beneficial for you at this time. Ketu’s aspect to your 10th house suggest it could be a good time to change careers, or to solidify your reputation in some unusual field. Rahu in the 12th house can bring all kinds material expenditure, while bringing your focus to spirituality, meditation, dream space, and foreign travel. Keep in mind that this Rahu also likes sex and smoke, so it Leo natives might find themselves easily tempted to less wholesome secret activity.

Virgo

Virgo natives could face some health problems in this period as Saturn and Ketu both aspect your lagna. This could also be a very good time for gain of vehicles, land, wealth. First marriages could face some surprising developments, but Virgo natives in their second marriage find this period more agreeable. In regards to those health problems I mentioned, you could find some relief thru Ayurveda or other folk remedies. Although the same energy that makes such healing possible could also bring some measure of dispute into the home, with ones mother or parents in general. This is also not likely to be a good period for ones children as Ketu and Saturn are both in difficult placement for the 5th house. Ketu can also lead to a loss of faith thru mere neglect. Rahu will be in the 11th house which could cause you to question the true intentions behind some of your friendships, but this Rahu can be good for profit and gain as you seek some direction thru your partners. Partnerships are likely to have a very strong influence on you in this period as you also find yourself strongly motivated by profit.

Libra

Libra natives will gain many blessings by Jupiter’s transit thru lagna, however this Jupiter also gives strong indications for some kind of swelling or enlargement of the body or some part of the body. This is generally a protective covering of fat, but if it gets to be too much, this defensive mechanism can become a problem. Jupiter’s aspects to 5th, 7th, and 9th house can also be a boon for education and you may be relied upon for advice in this period. This can be an excellent time for the children of Libra natives as they are likely to gain in life as well as achieve some wish they have been working towards. Business negotiations and contracts could prove lucrative in this period, and your spouse is likely to benefit as well. However you could meet with difficulties in a couple of related areas of life. Bed pleasures are likely to be either non-existent or somehow traditionally unnatural, and your home life might be taken for granted or disturbed. Perhaps in the process of moving you will find yourself with multiple homes but unable to feel at home. Rahu in the 10th house can be a good driver for your career, though Rahu tends to overstep his bounds; this could suggest a temporary position. The difficulty is that you may not treat it like a temporary position and over spend during a brief period of wealth in such a way that you end up more greatly impoverished. Be careful with purchases of expensive assets. It’s also possible that you could inadvertently release some secrets that you were meant to hold.

Scorpio

Scorpio natives are likely to have some foreign connections in this time, either thru travel or study. Expenditure is likely to be high in this period, but you are likely to be enriched in other ways (education, spirituality, ashram, retreat). Jupiter is also signifies children and other forms of creative productivity which may run into so unexpected expenses. Savings is also likely to meet expenditure or perhaps you will gain prosperity thru foreign sources. Saturn can be good for antique collectors as well as gain of property. It could also be a period where you are asked to oversee the collections or savings of the family or others. And although you are likely to see some kind of expansion of the home environment either in the size of the home or the number of people who live there, you might also suffer under some new rules and regulations in the home environment. You will likely be relied upon to collect confidential information and you will handle that information responsibly as your prosperity in this period will be effected not only by confidential sources, but also from other secret knowledge that you have gathered throughout your life. You could gain by the masses, but it might only be pennies at a time. The extent of gain will be seen in your individual natal chart. However, be very careful with your friendships in this period as you are likely to come into contact with a variety of societies undesirables. You might find yourself cut off from your distributive networks and separated from younger siblings, and you could find it quite difficult to motivate yourself to take direct action to achieve your goals. If you are in a marriage relationship, some difficulties are indicated. Contracts and such things in general will not hold your attention for long. Rahu is giving great indication for higher knowledge and pilgrimage travel; there are strong indications that you might undergo some secretive, intense, mystical spiritual practice. Scorpio native might have to be very conscious about the feelings and presence of others in their life as this Rahu can give selfish tendencies.

2017 -2018 Transit predictions for Aries, Taurus, Gemini & Cancer: Saturn in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Libra, Rahu in Cancer & Ketu in Capricorn

T
The original photograph of the Sleeping Dog’s

So much has changed since my last post. I should appoligize for the delay and thank those of you who reminded me to update my transit predictions.

Saturn is in Sagittarius, Rahu and Ketu in Cancer and Capricorn respectively, and Jupiter is in Libra. The others are making their way more quickly. The Moon, as I write this, is only 3 degrees from exact conjunct with Rahu in Cancer (as I hit publish, this conjunction is exact). There is certain,y some relation between this Rahu in Cancer, the sign of home and defensive perimeters, and all of this independence movement in the world. Saturn’s aspect from Scorpio would have been acting as a somewhat restrictive force, but with Saturn’s movement to Sagittarius this restriction is removed. We will have to watch for Mars to make his way thru Sagittarius, Capricorn (March 7, 2018 & May 2, 2018 respectively until November 5, 2018) as well as his next pass thru his own sign of Aries (beginning Feb 5, 2019). I expect that it will be a particularly hot summer of 2018: heatwaves, drought, as well as the political situation internationally (war, independence movements, the refugee crisis, and every kind of sudden, unexpected and potentially explosive). As you read these horoscopes for each sign, try to keep the world in mind as much as you think about these in a personal way.

In any case:

Aries

Aries is the natural horoscope where the signs and the houses match. Aries natives will find themselves blessed by Jupiter’s aspect to ascendant. This can bring positive personal grow and prosperity that occasionally manifests itself on the belt-line. Guru’s aspects to the 11th house can bring multiple sources of profit and gain as well as expending ones hopes and friends circles. Considering this aspect is coming from the 7th house, Jupiter in Libra can be very good for business allowing for multiple partnerships and contracts. This multiplying effect in the 7th house is good for business, and positive for single people, but for marriage it can be inconvenient for those devoted to monogamy. However, since Jupiter owns the 12th house, all of these 7th house matters could merely be matters of the imagination or expenditure of our life force. Jupiter int he 7th house can be very good for personal motivation. It’s very likely you will find yourself in various situations where you have to look into yourself to discover the right and honest mode of action. Saturn’s aspect to the 3rd house could also cause several delays in your efforts due to wanting to act within the law while also maintaining your own personal sense of Justice as well. Saturn in the 9th house can bring hard luck materially, but spiritually, this Saturn can diminish our sense of greed, ego, and competitiveness (what the Bhagavad Gita calls the triple gates to hell) as well as bringing humility into our lives. The combination of Jupiter and Saturn aspecting the 11th house and the 3rd house is generally beneficial in our lives and the lives of our brothers, both younger and older. The 11th lord in the 9th house (11th from the 11th) is an auspicious placement as is the 9th lord in the 7th house (11th from 9th): gainful for brother, gainful for father, and potentially gain by luck for oneself.

Ketu and Saturn are sharing an aspect to Virgo in the 6th house but the nodes are otherwise acting without influence from the other slow moving planets. These aspects on the 6th house can suggest taking responsibility for ones own health as well as gaining some opportunity to do some kind of service or social work. You could find that your enemies and obstacles are dispersed and restricted thru this period. Rahu can increase your expenses and your impulses as well as personal sense of security. Rahu in the 4th hosue can, however, bring a false sense of security since the imposure might be inside your own home already. This Rahu can bring a change of residence and foreign travel and Saturn in the 9th can bring an arduous pilgrimage.

Taurus

Taurus natives are very likely to receive help and/or good advice to overcome their difficulties. This could very well come unearned or unexpected from a friend or thru mysticism or occult means. Jupiter can bring gains from difficult situations and enmity, but the gain does come with some pain. Jupiter’s 12th house aspect can signify hospital intervention, ashram, charity or even educational expenditures. Again, Jupiter comes with mixed blessings for Taurus natives. The mutual aspect of Saturn and Jupiter on the 10th house can be good for one’s career and public reputation, but you are very likely to have top work incredibly hard; possibly taking on extra work or extra duties or extra hours that you may, or may not, get pain for. Many of Jupiter’s lessons with be taught alongside Saturn thru this period; this is one reason for the mixed results. Saturn is actually yoga karaka planet for Taurus natives. Yoga karaka essentially means that Saturn is very likely to be the most influential planet for bringing good and lasting things into a persons life. He gets this title of Yoga karaka by virtue of his ownership of the 9th and 10th houses; commonly considered the 2 best houses of the chart; essentially ones dharma and ones Karma follow a similar path. As Saturn transits thru Sagittarius, Taurus natives could take a turn for the secretive, hidden, mysterious; a holder of shocking secrets that cannot be disclosed. It could be a good time to acquire assets that will add to your families prosperity, the nature of this prosperity will be determined by ones own chart. If you are in business, you could find yourself seeking to broaden you distributive network; perhaps you have some local product or service that you’d like offer to a broader regional, national or especially foreign clientele. Taurus natives are likely to seek fulfillment thru friend networks, negotiations, contracts and partnerships. Regardless of your success in these endeavours, fulfillment is rarely achieved by following Rahu. This can be a very materialistic placement for Rahu, or, at least your sense of motivation may be suspect. Ketu is in an excellent position to bring you into contact with some kind of new age spirituality and/or spiritual practice. For Taurus natives, Ketu in Capricorn can bring a unique twist to ones life and personality. It could be one of those periods in ones life that we look back on as being a little strange. Ketu in the 9th house can bring many blessings from our past lives.

Gemini

For Gemini natives, this could be a very good period for higher knowledge and education. Jupiter is blessing the 5th, 9th, 11th & 1st houses which can also be good for studentship, spiritual practices, gain of educated friends, as well as providing a broad base for profit. This can be a very good time for luck coincidences. Saturn in the 7th house can be very good for committed relationships, and taking responsibility for our agreements. This Saturn will be better for relationships that are already in progress since it’s likely to delay or restrict the forming of new contracts or partnerships. Jupiter can bring dating and romance in the 5th house, but Saturn effect will be felt in the negotiation/agreement making process. Jupiter will be giving some blessing to any risk taking activity, so I don’t suppose single people will shy from dating, nor, for that matter, will investors shy from risk taking. Jupiter in the 5th makes these kinds of things all about spreading it our; broadening; and expending the risk taking activity in order to diminish the risk. Jupiter does not jump into things impulsively and foolishly. Rahu is in the 2nd house which can be good for savings, assets and collections; but it can just as likely bring our ruin as we seek an image based on these things. Such a false image can be expensive and bring debt by Rahu’s 6th house aspect. Ketu in the 8th can lead to taking your secrets, dreams and those subtle signals from your ancestors for granted. There may be some disturbance in the home as ancestral spirits are disturbed; both repression and dispersal are possible. In any case, you are not likely to find much enjoyment in the home through this period. Since this home energy also connects with the mother, she might also face some difficulties in this period.

Cancer

Cancer natives will be dealing with Rahu in the 1st house. This period will be all about you; other people in your life will either have to toe the line or go away. This is not a good frame of mind for healthy, prosperous relationships. Ketu could throw all these past agreements to the wind which would likely have negative effect on friend circles and distributive networks. Younger brothers are likely to be adversely affected, of you could find yourself associating with (or making business with) criminal elements. However, this Rahu can also bring a profound spiritual experience, world travel, pilgrimage or some unique (and likely intense) spiritual; practice. This Rahu likes Rudra and Durga and these destructively powerful energies of the universe. Knowledge and productivity are likely to progress along these lines. Ketu, as I said, will enhance your feeling of isolation. If we look at all of this as well as Jupiter’s influence to he 12th house this becomes an especially potent time for spirituality, higher knowledge, travel, connecting with ancestor spirits and other experiences that will help to carry you into your future. Be wary of occasional lapses of judgment; be gentle on yourself. Jupiter can also enlarge your home from the 4th house; this could be a renovation or addition to the home structure itself, or it could be an increase in the number of people in the home (children, some family member coming to stay, or perhaps a new tenant or roommate). This sort of thing can sometimes be a little uncomfortable and put people a little on edge making them feel like some normal routine things now have to be completed under the cover of secrecy. Saturn in the 6th house can be beneficial for you as he gives a restrictive influence to your enemies and obstacles. However, the planet of service in the house of service will give you some service to perform in your life; such social service should be considered a great blessing in life.

The Ground of Yoga: Why is yoga different from everything else we do?

What is the ground of Yoga? What is it that makes yoga unique and special setting it apart from all the other activities we perform on the course of the day or throughout our lives?

According to Patanjali, Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.

yoga cittavrtti nirodaha

Thru tradition we are advises to ground ourselves in our practice in a similar way.

Om shree ganesha namaha

Any kind of spiritual exercise begins with supplication to Ganesha, famous as the remover of obstacles, and our mind being the biggest obstacle to spiritual realization. The little rat (rodent) he uses as a vehicle is always chewing like the mind. You’ll also see his image or some symbol relating to him at the entrance ways of temples and some homes.

A fairly famous way of opening into a spiritual practice like yoga and meditation goes like this:

Om shree ganesha namaha

Om aparvitro pavitrova sharva vashtang

gato o piva yashmaret pundari

kaksham asavantra suchii

Om madhai namaha

Om keshai namaha

Om Rishikeshai namaha

Om pundari kakshan punatu x 3

Om apsarpantu te bhuta, ye bhuta bhuvi sanshitas

ye bhuta vignakartarste nashyantu

Shiva jnana

Om namaha shivaya

After supplicating Ganesha, it goes on to purify the body internally and externally thru supplication to Vishnu the great preserver and operator of the three gunas within the main trinity of gods at the level of Ishwara. After the purification rights (pundari kakshan punatu), we insist that ghosts, latent desires (apsar) and mental impressions of the past be banished from disturbing us from our practice. This will happen by reaching the level of Shiva knowledge (Shivajnana); universal consciousness. So from this we want to practice from a ground of Shiva consciousness.

As we continue our contemplation of the earth tattva, we have to remember that Shiva descended as far as earth and then stopped. He could have descended further, he can do as he likes, thus they say, he likes earth the best. Shiva descends to the most impure gross dense point of earth before making the ascension back thru the tattva.

In this regards, I think of all these people who ask about past lives and such things. If we consider the tattva of tantra, the individual soul exists below the maya tattva, so even our soul is subject to time and the rest, which allows for linear progression and thus past lives. Time, of course takes on a different dimension relative to the birth and death of that soul so when we think about past lives we need to consider that that soul too will make a complete cycle from purity to impurity to purity once again. Such a realization might be the Sankya ideal of kaivalaya for the duality is still there, but Tantra advises to press on beyond the knots, otherwise known as the universal womb, that separate us from from the supreme consciousness, which is the realization of the non-difference between the universal and the individual: moksha; liberation in this life. Patanjali’s yoga cittavrttinirodha is both the the definition of yoga and the means to stopping the fluctuations. We stop (nirodha) the fluctuations (vrtti) of the mind (chitta) by bringing them together in union (yoga). You could say that the project of yoga is to harmonize the mental fluctuations; the cittavrtti.

Going back to the original question of this article, what makes yoga unique. Yoga shares many similarities to creative projects like dance and the arts which also seek a kind of harmony between the artist and the mythical spirits which moves his hand to draw of feet to dance. But there is a subtle. Of course, one could make arguments for dancers at the highest levels reaching a kind of samadhi; but this says little stress, tension and competition that mark the a climb. The truth is that dance very typically has numerous undesirable side effects related to vata and pitta excess and diminished kapha. This is the exact opposite of what yoga is trying to do: cool, calm, lubricate and nourish the body and ultimately the universe. Harmony is something we seek on all levels, but only when we act for something far greater than ourselves or our limited sphere of perception to we strive for yogic perfection: balanced body, balanced mind, balanced spirit.

Sankya will take you to a firm notion of duality, while Vedanta will soften that sense of duality with the Brahman, but will maintain some sense of maya, while Buddhism is said to take you to the void, Tantra is said to carry us beyond the void to the very source of the arising, sustenance, falling away of every mental impression, experience, and the whole universe. I suppose you could say that dance will allow one to harmonize with some few others, Sankya will aid in harmonizing with most others, but only Tantra seeks harmony with the entire universe.

August Eclipse Predictions for the 12 Signs (Aries to Pisces)

Predictions  21 August 2017 Solar Eclipse

Solar Eclipse: Sun, Moon, Rahu within 5 degrees.

Sun & Moon in Magha – Mars in Ashlesha – Rahu in Ashlesha – Ketu in Dhanista – Saturn in Jyeshta – Jupiter in Chitra

Big events, like natural and man-made disasters often happen near the eclipses of the Sun and Moon. Considering the Sun and Moon will have already crossed Rahu by the time of the actual eclipse, I suspect most of the fireworks may be complete by the 21st of August.

The Sun and Moon will be together in Magha, a royal nakshatra whose symbol is the throne. Magha symbolizes the beginning of a new cycle, and the political overtones can be revolutionary due to Ketu’s rulership. Magha is fierce & fiery & tamasic & raksha. This will be a good time for harsh activity to impose traditional values.

Rahu and Mars conjunction will bring hyper-defensiveness, and a great outpouring of impassioned emotion. Venus is also here so it could turn into a big hippy love in where everything so beautiful and perfect “and anyways I love you, you’re a beautiful person.” But Mars is also in debilitation so perhaps the hippy love-in is provoking a hyper-defensiveness reaction bloodying a nose or two. Rahu in Cancer likes feeling emotion; everything is an emotional event for Rahu in Cancer. Your own Rahu and Moon will decide the content of that emotion.

I want to also point out that Magha also a shudra nakshatra despite the associations with power and royalty, respect, achievement and ultimate glory, Magha is still focused on service in the same way and reasonable king or ruler is servant of the people.

Cancer and Scorpio are the sensitive points of August 21st. Taurus is also receiving negative aspects from Saturn and Ketu, but Jupiter’s aspect has power to maintain harmony here as well as in Capricorn which is receiving aspects from Mars, Venus and Saturn as well as Jupiter. Ketu is a new occupant of this sign. No doubt there will be sudden changes of government, and executive power will flex it’s muscles; but Saturn is taking care of his own house by 3rd aspect and Jupiter is also lending his judicial weight so Capricornious things like public service should continue to flow.

Aries

Rahu will now be in the 4th house for Aries natives. The emotions mentioned earlier will be felt most by Aries natives who will have Rahu affecting both Cancer and 4th house Aspects on 8th and 12th houses will open up some opportunity for travel, research, occult activity, bed pleasures and philanthropy. Jupiter in the 6th can become a source of annoyance though his aspects to 10th, 12th, and 2nd will be more welcome as they suggest noble reputation, charitable expenses, and savings. Saturn will be in the 8th house adding to our longevity and offering some unwanted responsibility for confidential information. Ketu’s activity in the 10th house will be good for retirement, though career related activities could take a unique turn.

Taurus

Rahu will be coming into the 3rd house for Taurus natives. This position is likely to increase our effort and help us to strive just a little harder to get what we want. Rahu is not particularly interested in rules as long as he feels safe. His aspect on 7th house could be good for relationships though Rahu hard effort coupled with his illusory nature could get you into a situation that’s difficult to get out of. Jupiter will be in the 5th house, which can have excellent effects for students, teachers, performers and investment gain. Saturn will be in the 7th house bringing some durability to relationships and contracts even if they are not going well. On the other hand, this Saturn can put up walls between you and “your other.” Forming relationships could be difficult, and things like contracts and negotiations may get delayed or derailed. With Saturn and Ketu both aspecting 1st house, you may need to be aware of your health, though as I said earlier, Jupiter’s aspect here will help by advice or luck. Ketu will be aspecting the 9th house, which should be excellent for spirituality as Ketu introduces you to a variety of new spiritual beliefs. This is not a good position for following your family or birth religious traditions.

Gemini

Rahu will be in the 2nd house for Gemini natives. This will give a strong desire to appear wealthy, secure and stable. His aspects on 6th house can bring some illnesses related to over indulgence and his aspect on 10th house can push you to connect with society in new ways. Jupiter will be in the 4th house allowing you to combine work and home life (or work and pleasure). Jupiter’s aspect on 8th house can enrich your secrets, and his aspect on 12th can bring some good from the many expenses that may be incurred. Saturn will be in the 6th house making you take responsibility for your pains and illnesses and the various little obstacles we face in life (this included jobs we may take to pay the bills rather then build upon our career). His aspects on 8th and 12th house can be good for long distance travel and his aspect on 3rd house will bring responsibilities related with younger siblings or friends. Ketu in the 8th house dissipate your research and bring unexpected and unusual illnesses, especially shocking secrets, disturb your sleep and separate you from your home and happiness.

Cancer

Rahu will be transiting 1st house. This can be an intense time for Cancer natives as they seek to flex their ego and be known as a unique and worthy individual. Generally there is nothing wrong with this perspective, but Rahu can sometimes forget about all the ways we are connected with others. Rahu in 1st can also disturb ones health. Rahu will be looking at the 5th and the 9th houses which can be good for productivity, education and spirituality. Jupiter will be in the 3rd house helping out our relationship capacity in a variety of ways. Jupiter in 3rd will also ensure that you follow dharma in your effort. Saturn will be in the 5th house. This may not be a good time to bring babies into this world, but it will be a very good time for you to focus on the children and other productive growths for which you may be responsible. With Saturn Jupiter and Ketu all looking at the 11th house there is likely to be lots of changing activity here: gains are likely, but as old goals are achieved new goals will need to be made. Saturn will also be aspecting the 2nd house, which could suggest some added family responsibilities as well as keeping a close eye on your savings.

Leo

Rahu will be in the 12th hose for Leo natives. With Mars and Venus both there this could be a very good time for pleasure as these three are unlikely to allow much sleep to occur. There is an excellent chance of travel related to work of pilgrimage, or perhaps some foreign influence will come into your life. Jupiter will be in the 2nd house for Leo natives which will lend some good advice and positive progress in overcoming obstacles and illness as well as aiding the career and diversifying savings and liquid assets. Saturn will be in the 4th house favouring pleasure from spouse with some potential for disputes as well. This could also increase your duties and sense of responsibility in the house. Saturn’s aspect on 1st could also increase your sense of personal responsibility. Jupiter and Saturn’s combined aspects on the 10th house from Leo could set the stage for a great deal more work and responsibility in your career. Your natal placements will determine the details. Ketu in the 5th house can be a boon regarding life’s obstacles, but attention to what is really going on could make problems. Ketu’s aspects could have a negative effect on a family member as well as on those around you in authority.

Virgo

Rahu will be in the 11th house from Virgo. This can be good for gains, fame and working towards you hopes and dreams. Rahu in the 11th can support you with more creative effort and a desire to use others to connect to what you really want. Jupiter will be in the 1st house for Virgo natives. This can be good for health as well as for doing what is right. Your productive capabilities will be increased and you could receive some higher teachings and understanding of the universe. Saturn will be in the 3rd house hinting at responsibilities for younger siblings or perhaps for networking. This Saturn can also suggest some labour work since he is also 6th house owner. This Saturn can influence responsibilities over children as well as the responsibilities of fatherhood. Saturn’s aspect on the 12th house can restrict spending and expenses (perhaps 3rd house occupation will influence you to do things yourself). Ketu will be in the 5th house restricting new creative ventures. Creativity and your beliefs may feel scattered in this period. Perhaps you will be asked to do something or represent something you don’t necessarily believe in.

Libra

Rahu will be in the 10th house for Libra natives. I would expect mostly positive developments in your career thru August – September and thru Rahu’s transit in Cancer. The difficulty with this Rahu is his aspect on the 6th house, which will make you want to be known as someone who fixes problems. The problems to be fixed will, of course, be the problem; I don’t doubt your ability to fix them; it’s you ability to make them. Jupiter will be in the 12th house for Libra natives. This Jupiter can bring a variety of expenses into your life, particularly regarding health since Jupiter is in Virgo and aspects the 6th house. But his aspects to 4th house can bring expansion into the home (renovations or new family members are both possibilities). Saturn will be in the 2nd house reining in spending and making you work hard for extra gains. Ketu in the 4th house could bring a change of residence due to internal governance.

Scorpio

Rahu will be in the 9th house for Scorpio natives. This will bring a strong desire for higher knowledge and if Rahu has reached maturity beyond late 30’s, this position could also bring a strong desire to teach. Jupiter will be in the 11th house supporting a variety of options for gain and profit and his aspect on 5th house will be very supportive of educational opportunities. His aspects on 3rd and 7th houses will not likely be so obviously beneficial, but Jupiter will be working to improve your relationship and keep you out of trouble that may sometimes come by own effort. Scorpio will again be hosting Saturn in the 1st house, the planet of maturity and responsibility. His aspect on the 7th house can bring dryness to relationships, to career, and even group activities. Everything is likely to feel like some kind of responsibility. Ketu in the 3rd house can bring you in touch with new groups and organizations but his aspects could make it difficult for you to really feel connected with others.

Sagittarius

Rahu will be in the 8th house supporting travel, seeking, and research. By aspect he could bring some foreign influence into your home if you do not go out and seek it for yourself. Jupiter will be in the 10th house supporting your career with some extra tasks that might not necessarily mean extra pay, however his aspect on 2nd house could suggest increased savings. You will just have to watch out for some of the obstacles and duties that could be handed to you thru his aspect on 6th house. Saturn will be in the 12th house restricting expenditure; you may already be spending your savings so this is not necessarily a good thing. Saturn will also be looking at your 6th house, which is actually better than Jupiter’s aspect since it is more likely to translate into some kind of service which can be redeeming. His aspect on the 9th house could give you a sense of responsibility for your beliefs that can always be enlightening. Ketu will be in the 2nd house causing problems with your savings, but also saving you from much grief thru his dispersing aspect on 6th house. His aspect on the 8th house can limit your ability for great transformation in this period, but if it does come, it will hardly take any encouragement.

Capricorn

Rahu will be in the in the 7th house From Capricorn natives bring a strong desire to connect with others. Ketu in the 1st house can do a lot to scatter our sense of self and follow someone else’s lead. Rahu’s aspects on 11th and 3rd will hint at a desire to be known for your efforts. And it could very well be that you are only following some other person because you think they can help you get what you want. Jupiter will be in the 9th house: this can create excellent conditions for making some spiritual effort, seeking higher knowledge, and even moksha. Saturn’s 11th house transit could have a restrictive influence on your gains and you are likely to come into contact with the common people of society. If you’re patient, wealth could accrue from the sales of liquid assets or from family wealth. You may have feelings of responsibility for children and other creative/ productive responsibilities and if you are reading moon in Capricorn you might find your self a little more cold and calculating emotionally (especially as September comes to a close.

Aquarius

Aquarius might become very busy in the period after August 2017. The following year will be an excellent period for overcoming obstacles and completing your duties. You could find yourself motivated by a desire to make some savings or invest in some asset for your home or pleasure. Finances are certainly highlighted in this period. Be careful about going into debt for things you might regret later. It could be a very good period to gain thru confidential sources, from some unique knowledge or information you have, or by occult practice or means. This is also a good time to take on extra responsibilities in your career; but you will want to be careful about working too much. It might be necessary to make greater structure in the home in order to serve your career. You will also be feeling committed to your relationships.

The period after August 2017 will be a time of risk, romance, speculation and productivity. You might, however, have to work a little for your luck; nothing will come easy, but you will get what you need to achieve your hopes. The difficulty might come in rediscovering new hopes once you’ve achieved what you’ve been working for for so long. Relationships could be difficult in this time and you might find yourself struggling to follow broad-minded ideals regarding relationships and negotiation.

Freedom

I found predictive astrology while I was searching for freedom. As I came to better understand the limits to my freedom it just made sense that astrology would work. I was fortunate to have Sanjay close to give a demonstration and then, of course, to guide and teach me this fascinating science. There is nothing mystical about astrology except this view by even the most rational western scientists that it is indeed mystical. Science is observation and hypothesis for the purpose of prediction; astrology is no different. This is also how I came to astrology: I made a hypothesis that it should work, I tested this with Sanjay’s astrological knowledge, and now I am also capable of using astrological calculations myself for prediction – anyone who took the time to learn Astrology could too.

But astrology only shows how we are limited; it does not shoe us how be free. In regards to the tattva (the elements of existence), astrology represents the lower thirty one from kala to earth. This represents all of manifest existence within the realm of duality. In modern terms, this would include everything that is ruled by the natural laws of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics and the rest. All this change and diversity we experience is a result of these natural laws.

According to materialist philosophy, this is all there is. And regarding most orthodox spiritual paths which take the tattva into account, this divisioin represents the separation of God and Man; spirit and matter.

Tantra takes us further. And truth be told, even the Upanishades take us deeper though it’s rarely discussed. Beyond the tattvas of material existence are the tattvas which connect us to divinity. But we should be clear that the lower tattva are not in any way disconnected from the divine. ALL OF THIS is the Brahman. “I am Shiva; I am all of this.” Nothing is really separate from the Brahmin. All of this matter, all of this activity that we carry out is all the activity of Brahmin.

The duality is not a true duality, but only apparent duality. It seems to be that way because the limited body provides a limited perspective, but if we take the time we can learn to view the world in a more expansive, holistic, inclusive way. (It might be more correct to say that we can unlearn this world of division that we have become so accustomed to).

What does Tantra teach?

I often refer to Tantra as the Science of Freedom. This is not a hedonistic sort of freedom as practiced by the neo-tantrics (India has it’s own version of materialistic hedonism called Charvak). The freedom we can gain thru Tantra is directly related to the level of personal responsibility we are prepared to take.

The only value that is really taught in Tantra is a deep love and respect for material existence. If we consider that everything arises from within, this becomes a quest for self love; the world is merely a reflection of what we have inside.

That we are Shiva and this world is merely Shiva’s play is a fairly famous concept. But this universal Shiva nature that is dancing creation, maintenance, and destruction is not dancing in this world but upon the stage of our inner selves. It’s not others who are watching the play but our own senses who are the spectators. This is clearly stated in the Siva Sutras.

Why is Tantra the science of freedom? Because it empowers us to take command of our lives and follow what is in our hearts rather than merely reacting to what the world throws at us. We can either be bound by material existence, or we can be set free by it. This may be the only real choice we ever face. Every moment the choice must be made again. Are we free humans capable of directing our own fate, or are we bound pashus (no different from a draft animal yoked to the plough)?

To be empowered thru Tantra does not make one the slave master profiting from the ignorance of others. Love is never greedy and selfish; love is giving and accepting. If Tantra could be measured, we would be advised to look at how much one is capable of giving rather than the modern measure of success which is accumulation.

As we begin to discover some kind of spiritual truth, the only fitting response is worship of that great Lord from whose body the entire universe arises, is sustained and then falls away. Only by grace will our own Shiva nature will be revealed.

So, we can be bound like a draft animal or we can be lord of the universe. If we wish to be lord of the universe we only have to give up the farm; give up everything we have in this life to worship and we will achieve the whole world.

Shiva is free; just as we are free. There is no bargain going on. Shiva is not bound by any agreement; Shiva is not bound by anything. This means that there is no one thing that can be done to coerce his grace to fall upon us. Shiva reveals and conceals out of freedom of the will. He needs no reason to reveal and he needs no reason to conceal.

This is the great play of Lord Shiva.

Yoga Therapy Client Relations: Homework

  1. What does it mean to create a safe container?

Every sort of therapy, regardless of the intensity requires the client to feel a sense of safety and security in the space and in the presence of the therapist. W

One of the main roles we play as yoga teachers and traditional therapists is just to see people for who they really are; which from my perspective is Shiva; lord of the universe. The truth being that everyone is filled with divine beauty. Darshan is the Hindu expression for divine vision: they go to the temple to both give darshan and to receive darshan; to see god and be seen by god.

Darshan involves seeing without judgment; acceptance without condition. People can feel this and they generally feel safe in such an atmosphere. This sort of attitude of acceptance also involves ensuring that our expectations are balanced so that the client may feel empowered to take control of their own lives and be successful on their own terms.

I think it’s equally important for students and clients to understand that they are the ones doing the work and that healing will arise from within. It certainly is not the role of the yoga instructor to take any credit for any changes (or healing) that takes place. People who praise us for our helping hand would be better to direct their praise to that Shankara who is lord of the wheel of energies. This is just our luck to be present and to be used as a instrument for healing.

  1. Telling a student what is best for them vs encouraging them to find out for themselves?

This issue has been raised many times in different ways throughout the workshops I have been attending at Ajna. On the one hand, the body is incredibly strong and can handle almost any posture that we enter into voluntarily, on the other hand, the body is an incredibly fragile thing that can be injured for almost no apparent reason.

Yoga relies on several forms of knowledge including scriptural (knowledge of the experts) and experiential (knowledge gained thru our own experience). As yoga teachers’ people come to us because we have prior experience and study of a practice they would like to incorporate into their lives. From this perspective, it’s our job to advise them based on our own experience or personal study of the scriptures (modern scientific research on yoga could be considered scriptural knowledge in the modern context since modern scientist often play the role of guru these days).

However, telling people what we have learned thru experience or scripture is only half of our job. We must also inform students that if they have any doubt about our teachings, they should discover it for themselves either thru their own personal experience contemplative meditation.

The examples from Patanjali emphasis surrender to that divine will which is always guiding our material being, but there is another side of yoga that emphasizes personal responsibility. If everything is arising from within then the truth is that we cannot blame any of our injuries on our yoga teacher; we have to take responsibility for that. (We cannot blame anything on anyone else for the events of our lives or the way we perceive them). We cannot expect to be healed by our yoga teacher, as this is also our own responsibility.

…. This will be continued in the answer to question #4: “owning” ones own practice.

  1. How does my awareness of privilege (or lack of privilege) affect my actions?

By all appearances I am a middle aged white male; top of the heap.

I’ve spent considerable time traveling places like India where my white skin quickly distinguishes me as a wealthy and privileged person of this world. Add this to a society where the “guest is god,” then I most certainly take a privileged position in Indian society. In Canada, this travel is seen as leisure, which also creates an appearance privilege (how many times have I heard: “You’re so lucky.”)

On the other hand, I’m hard of hearing, metis, forest loving traveler following some foreign beliefs. I can let my appearance get pretty rough, and of course isolation has it’s own effects. Other than being a white male, whatever privileges society offers are swept away in the way marginalized people get swept away in almost any society.

Perhaps I’m especially privileged that I can choose one appearance over the other. Knowing I can choose, I generally prefer to choose the role of marginalized. It’s part of the lesson for people to look beyond appearances. On the other hand, it can be very useful to play into these appearances, polish myself up and assert my privilege to get what I want from society.

The important thing is to recognize that the world of appearance does not change what we have inside, which is where our true strengths and weaksnesses lie. We cannot take it personally when someone gives way to our privilege, nor should we take it personally when someone takes advantage of theirs. It’s always give and take and it all arises from within.

  1. How to empower our students to “own” their practice?

I often tell my students that my role is only to teach them yoga so that they can go back home and make their own practice in the bedrooms and private spaces. I teach pretty close to the same routine every class and try to remind them (and myself) that it’s their class; I can adjust to what they want. I often tell them that listening to me is actually taking away from a much greater inward experience that they could have at home. I ask them about their own practice (yogic or otherwise) and encourage them to follow that and perhaps discover the yoga in it even if it doesn’t seem at all like a yogic activity. I try to inform clients on the various kinds of yoga that are not necessarily asana based and encourage them to connect with those things that bring them a clean and clear sense of joy. It’s also not uncommon for me to go to people’s homes and practice (or teach) yoga with them there. And of course always trying to direct their awareness inward where they can experience their power and realize their own personal responsibility.

  1. Strengths based practice: how does this intersect with how I’ve been taught to teach yoga?

This field is perhaps one of the main ways that yoga and other forms of traditional healing differ from healing in the west. The experience of most traditional healers that we are not really healers at all; but perhaps, at best, we are instruments of healing in the same way almost anything can act as such an instrument when the time for healing comes. The true healing, of course, comes from within the individual. I have often been taught that my job is just to do my job to the best of my ability and not worry about results. Not everyone will get the same results and certainly not everyone is looking for the same results; they will get from me whatever they have in them to get and I will get the same from them.

This is traditional ways: give up seeking results, give up your attractions and repulsions, forget your prejudices, be aware and see people deeply for who they really are which in yoga essentially means to see ourselves deeply for who we really are: we are that shiva nature, that consciousness permeating everything, that joy and freedom that underlies everything. Be aware of who you really are and then express that in the therapeutic model that resonates with you, master your own practice (whatever that is) and share it with others, it will resonate with some people and others will be repulsed by it. This is not personal.

Yoga talks about the different kinds of students, this relates also with healing: some will be healed miraculously from the slightest hint, some will need some explanation, some will need practice and explanation, some will need even more work for just the slightest understanding, others will never get anything from us; some might get a small token, others a fortune. These things are not for us to be concerned with; this is all karma. By some combination of their luck and our luck things will happen. However, we are still very much personally responsible, so, in the context of yoga therapy our job is twofold: 1. to keep up to date with the latest therapeutic models; and 2. to cultivate inner yogic awareness. Put another way, we must be aware of all the tattva (which is all this science and nature we are studying from this guruji who has so many impressive years of experience); know them by scripture (specialists) and know them by personal experience. These classes are modern form scripture, however life experience is always the highest knowledge.

We will heal to that tattva for which we have awareness. The more pervasive our awareness the deeper is our ability to heal… ourselves….. and then we see that we are not different from those who come in front of us.

Our job is not to heal, but to be ourselves to the greatest possible degree. If our dharma is too heal, then we have a particular responsibility to be the absolute best version of that healers self we can be. If we want to teach empowerment we have to realize it in ourselves. Prove that the method works on your self and then teach that method to others.

I would love to hear your comments.
